She's Back - With Glossier Photos, Brighter Shots, and A Mostly Modern Look at Quilters
Any new publication by Jo Packham is cause for immediate checking out. So when I first learned she was turning her focus to quilters and quilting with her new book Where Women Create - Quilters, it went on my Amazon Wish List months before publication. This time, all the photos have a satiny sheen, and are clear and bright. It's organized by designer; there are 20 of them, and you can see their names by using Amazon's Look Inside! feature. There's a "mostly mod" vibe going on throughout, with Kari Meng being one notable exception. Her exquisite rouge and stone colors feature prominently in her quintessentially Euro-vintage-style chapter. Most noteworthy for me is the photo of the BACKS of some of her blocks; my very best piecing never looked that tidy. Also featured is a guy who busts through the WWC hormone ceiling: David Butler ("the" Amy's husband). His flag-styled quilts and starry projects are divine. I've loved his Parson Gray fabric lines for their simple good looks and strong unusual colors. But his chapter is a bit disappointing because there are no sneak-peeks at his studio space. My favorite montage is for designer Janet Bolton. Her small-scale textile picture pieces are spare, charmingly quirky, and I could look at them for hours. (But I secretly lust for her buttons.) I like that her space looks just a little messy, but very clean. You can tell that no scrap is exempt in her space. Now, what about these "more than 80 online quilt patterns" referred to on the front cover? Here's how it works - I think; this was not so easy to figure out and the instructions are somewhat hidden. Each designer has a 12-inch square quilt block design. You then go to the publisher's site (Quarry Books) as given on the WWC Quilters book's copyright/ISBN page (the 4th physical page of the book, at the very bottom). Find the entry for the designer whose block you are interested in. You can THEN use that one block to make that designer's projects as shown in the WWC Quilters book. Most projects have variations, making for a total of 86 projects across all 20 designers. And just so you know, some portion of the content has appeared in the magazine Where Women Create. A few photos seem identical to my eye, while others seem to be different shots taken from the same photo session. I found this out by online-searching for one of the designers (Michele Muska), going to the search result from the WWC site, noting which issue the site says she appeared in, then comparing that issue with the book. (If you do go to the WWC site, just don't try to use Internet Explorer to view it. You'll need to use a different browser.)Great book, and it's nice to see that some presentation changes were made for this publication. It's not as dusty and muddy as one of the previous books. This time, I can look at each photo repeatedly, but clearly see something new each time. I really want to linger over it. Usually I drool over the studio shots, but this book has me marveling more at each artist's mini-gallery.

Nicely done by Jo Packham
Nicely done by Jo Packham. Interesting selection....some very well known artists....others rising stars. Would be nice to have a bit more on the technical side of setting up the studios. Pretty is nice, but thats such a personal decision. I guess that's the point after all.....the studio should reflect the artist and does in this booklet.

Love this book
If you love to create and are interested in woman that do then this is a really inspirational book. The layout is well done with great photos of their work and studios. The stories are all about how they got to do what they do which is fascinating. This book looks great sitting on my coffee table as it has a well designed cover.

Beautiful and inspiring
I could read this book every day. The artists represented are so talented and varied. I see something new each time I pick it up and am always inspired. It's beautiful.

Title misleading
I was disappointed with the content of the book for 2 reasons. The title Where Women Create led me to believe the book was more about the design of quilting studios; and the quilts were limited to modern design which is not my cup of tea. On the other hand, the layout was well done, the pictures colorful and the stories were really interesting.

disappointment
I was disappointed in this book I thought it would be everyday quilters like Lori Holt but it was more artsy quilters that I have no interest in at all If a quilt isn't useful than I do not believe in making it (bed quilts, runners etc) The book showed me very little of how a everyday quilter would set up their room to quilt. The pics were nice, but did not interest me much. I would not buy this book again or recommend it to the group that I quilt with.

Absolut empfehlenswert!
Fix geliefert!

A great book for dipping in to.I feel like I'm having a look around the work spaces of some really interesting designers while, obviously, they're not around. Can't believe they are so tidy!
