yes you can apply product yourself. It releases the hair but not as a relaxer. It is used with the wave system. If you have never applied a relaxer yourselfthen go to a salon.

I have a mix of straight and wavy hair. Would this bring out my natural curls?

From my own personal use/experience (12 yrs+), this is how it seems to work: Phase 1 chemically straightens your natural curls (not so much "bringing them out" as making them bone-straight, and thus more manageable). Phase 2 allows you to reshape your hair into any type of curls you want- loose, tight, wavy, etc, depending on which type of rollers you use and how you use them. And Phase 3 locks your new pattern in. Hope this helps :) P.S. I'm far from an expert on this, so this is simply what I've observed when doing this to my hair over the years...
