Silent Night (2023) DVD

I pretty much watch everything that has this actor in it. I researched him on Google and find him to be an actor who really studies his roles and takes on the persona. of the character.

This movie seems to have gotten a lot of bad reviews and I think that's unfortunate because it really is a solid, well made action film when you look at it on it's own merits. It's directed by prolific action director John Woo who, if you don't know who he is, he made some incredible Hong Kong action films in the 90s including the movie "HardBoiled" which is legitimately one of the greatest action films ever made. Like seriously, if you've never watched "HardBoiled" and your an action movie fan, then stop reading this review and go and watch that movie. It's incredible. Anyway, this movie was supposed to be John Woo's big return to the action genre and I think a lot of people just wrote this film off as a boring John Wick knock off, which... is kind of understandable, but let me explain first. This film is more of a drama film with action sequences sprinkled in here and there. It is not a fast paced action movie and can even be kind of slow at times. It also has a very simplistic story centering around one man's quest to get revenge on some gangsters who injured him and killed his son in the crossfire of a shootout. Ultimately It is a VERY BASIC revenge plot with very little in the way of interesting subplots or any twists or turns in the story. That might sound bad and unappealing, but what makes this movie work is in it's execution. You see, the main character in this film gets shot in the neck at the very beginning and subsequently can't speak and goes through the entire movie not saying any dialogue. So basically the whole movie is told without any exposition dumps or any spoken words and instead is all told through visuals. I don't know about you, but as someone who hates the reliance of exposition dumps in movies, I freakin love this! It's an action/drama film that is able to tell it's story through visuals and visuals alone and really highlights the acting performances of each character as they are pretty much having to act and convey what they're going through from facial expressions alone which thankfully is done very well here. Actor Joel Kinnaman who plays our man character delivers a fantastic performance here and its a shame that so many people are just passing this movie off without giving it a chance. This is visual story telling at it's purest form right here. Now granted, the story is still a very basic revenge plot, which some people might find unengaging, but the fact that it's all told without any dialogue is what makes it impressive and sets it apart from most other action films. And while there isn't as much action as say in a John Wick film, when the action does happen, it is very good and well shot & choreographed. John Woo still knows how to film and edit good action. I also thought it was nice that the main character is not a trained bad*ss at the start of the film, but rather has to learn to fight and handle guns throughout his revenge quest. It made his character seem more relatable and you really got to see him grow and change from a mild mannered family man at the start of the film, to an unstoppable killing machine by the end. He wasn't perfect either. He makes lots of mistakes and messes things up throughout the film, like in a scene where he kidnaps a gang member and tries to force him into telling him where the guy who killed his son is, only for said gang member to escape mid-interrogation and have this long fight scene where he almost ends up getting killed. It's things like this that really made his character seem more real and believable compared to most other action film characters. The slow pacing also works to the movies advantage because you get this nice buildup to each action sequence. My only real complaint is that the film's climax does end up feeling kind of underwhelming and is definitely the weakest part of the movie. I won't spoil it here, but it's not the greatest payoff, at least not for me. That aside though, everything else in the movie I enjoyed a lot. It's not the greatest action movie ever made. It's not a John Wick film and its nowhere near as epic as John Woo's earlier films like "Hardboiled", but it's still a very well made revenge flick that makes great use of visual story telling and has a great acting performance by Joel Kinnaman which I think makes it worth checking out.

It was interesting how they did this film without any verbal dialogue but irregardless of the lack of dialogue, the film is a great revenge flick that anyone who loves to see the bad guys of this world get what they deserve will enjoy. Yeah, that might sound a bit sick to some but way too often the bad people of this world run rampant without any consequences and to have a film where the worst of the worst finally gets their due is real justice. Great film, both my Wife and I enjoyed it and the fact there was no dialogue was no hindrance to that enjoyment.

Bluray feedback, the film is strange, no dialog, almost mute all the film, just music. Good action and very violent, it is not a bad movie, just different. Do I like it? Yes and no, first half during training is very realistic, last half, during vendetta, very unrealistic in several scenes. I like the movie, but it is not John Wick, of course, try to be. I do not like the mute all the movie and in all the characters, it is ridiculous. Spanish audio and subtitles.

Not that great a movie for action but the actor was good and most times play in good movies.

There are no words spoken in this action film...they story is told in silence...as one man takes vengeance of the gang who mistakenly killed his young son! Joel Kinnaman is s stand out in this none speaking rolll..If you like action and a very good story...check this out

This is a region-locked disc from Region A, not usable in the UK, please list this kind of information on your product page as the lack of said region code made me think it could be region free
