good movie, based on a true story
I'm always skeptical when I hear about movies that are based on true stories. We know how Hollywood likes to play fast and loose with that definition. Often, the movies actually have little in common with the truth. So whenever I watch a movie that is supposedly based on a true story, I often spend more time wondering just how much is real and how much is fiction. You don't have to worry about that with this film, which depicts the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl, Rachel Barber, who was eventually discovered to have been murdered by 20-year-old Caroline Reid/Caroline Reed Robertson, a former babysiter. The Barber family actually participated with the making of this film. I've read Elizabeth Barber's account of the crime (Perfect Victim, written under her pen name Elizabeth Southall), and the movie hews very closely to her story. Although the murder scene is disturbingly graphic, the film does not come off as some cheap lurid trashploitation film, the way a lot of "true crime" movies do. I felt like the filmmaker (Simone North) really does respect the Barbers and went out of her way to tell their story as best as she could. This movie is not perfect. I'm not sure how I feel about the movie's structure. I'm not against non-linear storytelling - I enjoyed the movie Elephant by Gus Van Sant - but I don't think North was entirely successful in how she did this. The movie starts off from Mike and Elizabeth's perspective. Then it loops back in time as we switch to Caroline's, then we switch to Rachel's, etc. I just don't think it flowed very well. The actors are all top-notch, especially Ruth Bradley. She really makes Caroline not come across as a one-note villain. As for the DVD itself... there are a number of extra features here that people might like. We get a few short deleted scenes, plus a couple of behind-the-scenes clips. I particularly enjoyed the interviews with Guy Pearce and Mirando Otto. (Side observation: Miranda chokes up a few times during her interview when she's talking about the real Rachel. It is strangely touching, maybe because it tells me that this wasn't simply a paycheck for her. She's clearly been affected by the story.) We get to see a number of photos of the real Rachel, as well, along with the rest of the Barber family. It's sobering and really drives home the fact that she was a real person, not simply a character in a movie.

I'm STILL Crying...!! Wolf in Sheep's Clothing Indeed...!!
Above all--which isn't a cheap shot--the music is amazing. Secondly--the girl playing the villain--completely blew me away: That chick has TALENT.Don't let that undercut everyone else, the actors in this were absolutely amazing. I lost a child who was murdered as well. And the circumstances were that of complete STUN. Just like these parents, it just throws you into a world of cloud...and you have absolutely no choice in the matter but to take it, that clock just keeps ticking, nothing stops: You go thru the motions of what you think is your daily life while it hangs like a phantom albatross around your neck...EVERYONE'S neck, really. Nobody knows how to talk to you, it's crazy. Y'know when a tree gets chopped down, how the branches still support the leaves for a while till they finally get hit with it...? A lot like that. I think that was depicted really well in this movie--the scene didn't last long, but you got the vibe. "Is that all there is?" FYI, you really lose your marbles later, much like the father staring into the water like that.Back to the actress playing Caroline: She gave her ALL to this movie, this story. How insanely ridiculous and almost random, this murder. Just plain OFF and senseless (to us). What a lost human being and I genuinely hope they did NOT set that mental case loose in 2013. I'm off to find details now.Anyway, if you do watch this movie, be prepared to scream at the screen, it's infuriating and loaded with sadness and loss, so bring the tissues while you're at it.Fantastic flick. Instant five stars, no debate about it.

Painful
First, the acting was quite good as was the music sound track. I just have ask why the parents of Caroline never thought to have some intensive psychiatric intervention/treatment for her.

Great true crime movie!!
This is a great movie that is super understated and follows the true story of a young teens death at the hands of a jealous over weight 20 something ex babysitter... I just happened to find it on Netflix and liked it so much I ordered it! This movie does an amazing job of showing the dark side of the human mind and the influence of depression and self loathing.

UNFORGETTABLE!
One of the best movies I have ever seen. The acting is SUPERB!! I finally bought it on DVD because it was no longer available to stream. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for an unforgettable experience. You will not soon get it out of your head. The scene between Sam Neil’s character and his daughter is gut-wrenching! And then there’s Miranda Otto, who is awesome in any film. A MUST SEE!!!!!

CHILLING
What a tragic story! Caroline Reid Robertson so clearly needed to be committed to a mental institution years before she murdered Rachel Barber. The movie is an excellent portrayal of the case, and the actress who plays Caroline is fantastic

All in all I love this movie
Although this movie is based on a true crime story and very disturbing it is one of my favorites. I cried and was upset so it's definitely an emotional movie but very well acted and just makes you wonder why people do the things they do and why. All in all I love this movie. You get a view inside the victim's life, her family, and also the psycho killer and her family. Brilliant movie!! Love love love it!!!!

Was Ruth Bradley abliefert, ist allergrösste Schauspielkunst. True story close to home
I lived in the area and my children went to the same primary school.A chilling reminder of how ones actions impacts on others in both negative, Caroline's response to her family situation, and positive ways, the Missing persons officer who finally took the parents seriously.Well acted and filmed fairly close to " on location" where the events actually took place.
