A great detector that gives peace of mind
This funky orange CO detector comes in a nice retail box, which is compact and without wasted packaging. I’m not an expert on this sort of kit but I am impressed by the build quality for such a relatively inexpensive device. This feels pro-level, and I know that those detectors cost in the hundreds. It runs on 3 x AAA batteries, which are included for a change. I recalibrated my unit as it was giving strange readings out of the box, which is not unusual with detectors that have been in storage. (this is covered in the instruction booklet). The LCD is easy to read and has a backlight which helps a lot in dark conditions. The alarm is specific and loud, there’s no mistaking if it has detected excess CO. There is also a visual alarm for those hard of hearing. The unit has a lot of helpful settings, although historic min/max levels are not included, which seems like a strange omission. My £2.50 humidity detector has that function. In testing with our oil burner it easily detected CO from the exhaust, which shows the burner isn’t fully efficient (which no burner is, of course). Inside the house no leaks were found. This will be great for use at home or in a business, of course if you’re having problems always call the experts in right away and don’t rely on a cheap tool like this. The current price is £42.99, which I think is worth it considering how expensive a callout or professional unit would cost.

Look impressive. Simple to use.
I can't really tell if they work or not because I don't have a CO leak to test correctly but it will make you will look like a ghostbuster and that is enough for me. They are simple to use. Turn on and point at the various potential sources of CO.

Discovered a leak in my chimney with this device!
Item: TopTes CT-300 Portable Carbon Monoxide Detector Current price: £42.99 I tested this product out initially by taking a reading from my car's exhaust. Once the CO reading goes over 50, the detector emits an audible alarm and the display changes colour to alert you. Once we had established that the detector did read carbon monoxide, and that the alarm worked, we lit the coal fire and waited. Earlier this winter, with the coal fire lit during a cold spell, the carbon monoxide alarm we have in our sitting room went off. Suspicious that it may be a fault, I opened the doors and windows, waited until the alarm stopped sounding, then dug the alarm we take camping with us out of a cupboard and put that one in the sitting room too. Sure enough that carbon monoxide alarm also went off. With no gas supply in our village, and no bottled gas, the only possible source of the problem was the coal fire. We checked the chimney (not blocked), we swapped for higher quality coal, and tried again. After being lit for 2 days, the carbon monoxide alarms started to sound again. The third time, we had this CO Detector on hand. We were able to check the levels of carbon monoxide around the room in which we usually sit (0), the levels in the fireplace itself (0-4), and after removing the mantle, the levels coming from the brickwork around the fireplace - that's where we found our leak. The readings were 0 all the way around except for at one point where the reading crept up to around 30. A few cm lower, and the audible alert activated and the display changed colour as the readings rose as high as 140ppm. The exhaust gases from the fire were leaking back into the room through a crack we couldn't see, but have been able to identify and locate using this detector. So not only does it work, but its design allows directional detection to pinpoint sources of CO where there is a leak. Definitely recommended!

Good device - reasonable packaging
This device works well - I tested it around my house then outside around my boiler flue. It picked up very small amounts of CO outside around the flue (I didn't put it directly into the gases coming out of the flue - that would be daft) and nothing inside (fortunately). This is an ideal tool for those working with gas installations (domestic or industrial) and may also suit people who regularly stay at B&B's/caravans/student accommodation etc for extra peace of mind. As CO is an odourless gas and has the potential to kill I think £37 is a small price to pay to have a little more assurance that any accommodation, that your or your family stay at, is less likely to have a problem with carbon monoxide. Alternatively you could just buy a carbon monoxide alarm and take that with you but that will only go off when levels hit a certain amount and may not be loud enough to wake someone who has been enjoying the student bar! As for the packaging - it comes with a protective case which is nice but it would have been much better had the instructions been a little bit bigger (text size) and not in several languages so that they could fit within the case, with the tool. It comes supplied with 3 AAA batteries but you will need a small #1 pozi drive screwdriver to fit them. Be careful though, as one annoyance for me is that the screw holding the battery box cover on is not captive and is so small that if you drop it you will loose it.
