Trainspotting (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Excellent film, disgraceful packaging by Criterion. They should be ASHAMED.
Criterion usually does a very good job, on all their release, but at times, their packaging in an embarrassment, as it is with this title. They call it a Digi-Pak and it's BIG claim in that part of it, glows in the dark, so like, WHO CARES? Anyone paying the prices they charge isn't worried about crap like that, they are collectors, as am I, and they want these items sent in pristine condition, and in a format that is suitable. As they did with their "Citizen Kane" debacle..(which I never bought because of it's disgraceful packing) this film is presented in a super CHEAP, flimsy, outrageously bad, cardboard, thin box, which barely holds this disc inside. I didn't even open mine, and both discs were extruding from the ends, which will obviously lead to damage. RETURNING AT ONCE!! For the prices Criterion charges they should have more respect form themselves and their customers who expect better. Many say home media is dying out, I hope it isn't true, but if Criterion continues to go this cheap a** way, I can guarantee they'll lose my business, and many of those whom I recommend them to. You should be ashamed. If you're not, it truly shows who you are. This film deserved a LOT better. An EMBARRASSMENT!!

One of Criterions best 4k transfers
This looks extra amazing, colors are so much brighter with so much clarity and detail over pervious blu-ray and DVD versions. Does have some slight film grain so it does look like you are watching a film it has not been scrubbed free from any film grain. The 5.1 mix is also just the best with all the fantastic original music you remember. I am not crazy about the packaging but it playful and fun and was not made into a standardized version for mass consumption. I could see this glossy paper version selling out. The Disc menu + music is just the best and will have you humming along in no time! This is one for cinephiles, movie collectors and as well fans of the Criterion movie catalog. This is the 90s version equal to the cultural zeigest as much as Easy Rider was to the 60's counter culture. I love it!

I'm giving 4 stars because I got this for $20 off. C'mon Criterion...
tl;dr - Film quality is amazing. Packaging is disappointing. I would say don't buy it if it is over $30-$35 in price. So right off the bat I just wanna say the transfer of the film itself is amazing. The movie itself is where this remaster shines. Criterion's team did a top notch job as always as far as the scan of the film itself.I can see what they we're going for in terms of the look and styling of the packaging (very similar to the presentation and packaging of a vinyl record.) I do see the validity of the comments for this movie in that during shipping it could be VERY easy for the disc to be damaged in transit. Fortunately, this was not the case for me.The biggest issue with me concerning the packaging it the TREMENDOUSLY flawed dimensions for the packaging. As someone who collects pretty much only Blu Ray movies and who just recently bought a nice, new shelving explicitly for blu-rays, this movie just BARELY fits in that shelving as there is just enough wiggle room in the dimensions of the shelves.I don't think the packaging itself is rotten to the core, but the execution was seriously fumbled.I pre-ordered their upcoming 4K remaster of Blue Velvet (at full price) and it is my hope Criterion will see the feedback for this release and learn from it.

Excellent 4K Restoration!
If you're like me, this is the first time you've ever seen a good looking version of this movie. Since my childhood I've always wished this got the release it deserved. Even the standard release Blu-Ray was a low quality transfer with poor audio.Watching this version was like seeing this movie for the first time again. So many details in these scenes that I've missed over all these years watching 720p DVD rips. The soundtrack finally shines. On top of that, I have to say I like the packaging. I have a lot of Criterion stuff, and some people might complain about the slip case on this one. I actually quite like it. It's very well designed and definitely goes great with the movie and the art. The booklet is a great read about the soundtrack and the creation of the film. This is the version of Trainspotting to own.

Great Movie, Lousy Container
Trainspotting is a great movie. If you're interested in buying this physical media, you already know that. What you need to know is Criterion did a terrible job with the packaging for this movie. The 4K and BD are not in a normal Keepcase, rather it's a custom digipack. It's basically a glorified unfolding Hallmark card. The discs are slide in/out of the top cardboard sleeves - Which is TERRIBLE for discs, as they get scratched up. Besides this gross negligence of design, the package is also a custom size. Standard Keepcases are about 5.25" wide. This is about 6". So it may not fit on your shelf, and if it does, it's going to stick out of your collection ~3/4".I have purchased several other 4K Criterion releases this last year including Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, For All Mankind, Princess Bride, Dazed and Confused, Time Bandits and others... Even the ones that were in special Digipacks or Digibooks still had nice and proper plastic trays to keep the discs safe, and are the same size as normal cases (or very close to it) to fit properly on a collector's shelf.Trainspotting still gets its stars, but I'm removing some for the awful case. Criterion is supposed to be a bastion of movies, they should know better how to properly store home physical media, and that cardboard sleeves are NOT the way to go.

One of th Greatest Films Ever Made
One of my top five favorite films and I'm so thrilled it's now part of the Criterion Collection. The restoration is sensational!

Do you shee the beasht? Have you got it in your shights?
I remember renting this movie, not long after turning 18 so i could rent R rated movies. At that age, i did enjoy the movie, but will admit I didn't fully understand it. Watching it years later, i have a better appreciation for the movie...and obviously undertand it a little better LOL.Despite a lot of the main focus on the movie being about drugs (in this case Heroin) it does nothing to "glorify" it or the people addicted to it, showing the ups and downs of their addictions.Highly recommend this movie to fans of British movies, fans of Danny Boyle and fans of Ewan McGregorThe audio and video quality on the Blu-ray was amazing.

Poorly packaged with possible technical problems
I had a problem with the 4K disc freezing around chapter 11. Not always at the same moment, but always during this chapter. Chapters 12 and 13 would not play. If I selected them from the main menu, it would just skip to chapter 14. I did a bit of googling and found many people experienced the same problem. When I wrote to Criterion, they provided me with some tricks to try and resolve the issue, but none worked. I own several 4K discs from Criterion and they all play well with no problems, but this one seems to have a bug. I don't know if it's certain copies, or if this disc just doesn't play with certain players or settings, but I ultimately returned it because I could not watch 20% of this movie. It's a pity because the transfer looked fantastic. And as others have pointed out, the packaging is terrible. It's an awkwardly sized greeting card that houses the discs in annoying sleeves instead of a normal plastic case. Criterion really overthink their packaging sometimes. I guess they think it adds novelty, but I really just something that works.

Love the film! Hate the packaging!
Let me state, right off the top, that the movie is great. The colour grade is suspect, but given it's Director approved, I can't complain too much. However, Criterion's packaging for this release and the price charged are shocking. The discs are housed in a thin cardboard sleeve that folds out. There is no external hard-shell box to house the thin paper sleeve, so good luck with this release not completely deteriorating over time. The cardstock used couldn't have cost Criterion more than 10 cents to produce, so the $65+ charge for this release is criminal. Unless you are a big fan of this film, avoid this release. It's high time Criterion stopped living off its legacy name and started providing quality across the whole of its releases.
