Stabilize it with something like a cinder block!
I'm a person who has read and successfully followed directions for many, many you-put-it-together items. This is no exception, but I do think it is a badly designed product in general. Basically you secure a pole into a heavy stone base with a big screw and a couple of washers, then follow a slightly different procedure to secure a second pole, and then a third pole that is angled in an arc. To that you secure the large round metal shade, put in the included bulb, plug in to wall outlet, switch on, and you're done. Turn off switch and unplug from wall after each use.I did follow all the steps carefully and in order from the diagram and text directions. The main problem appears to be the heavy weight of the shade, which pulls the whole structure forward and even warped a little metal ring that was supposed to help hold it secure to the base. The long and short of it is: this is too big to return, it's really rather pretty and the dimmer works. So...if you counterweight the back of the round rock base behind the pole so that the weight rests against a wall (using something like a vertical cinder block draped in an attractive old blanket), it works, and I do like it. Wouldn't buy it, or anything shaped like it, ever again, but I've made it work for me.

Beauty
First, it needs to be said that this lamp is gorgeous and quite large. It will easily become a focal point of your room whether you want it to or not. With that said, there are a few negatives to point out.First, the finish is very fragile. In fact, it came with plenty of scratches already on the globe and base. Fortunately, they can't be seen from afar, but with the cost being what it is, it is very disappointing to see scuffs and scratches in the finish.Next, the assembly is a pain in the rear. The instructions are short and sweet, but clear enough. The toughest part is putting the rods together with all the cabling you need to stuff in them. We found that if we pushed the cable adapters down into the rod as deep as possible and off to the side, we could slip the other rod in with less effort. It would have been nice if the manufacturer left more slack to slip the cables down deeper.Lastly, we are not sure if it is the bulb or the socket, but the bulb flickers randomly. It is very annoying, and almost to the point that we don't want to use it.Onto the better news. As noted, it is gorgeous. The color of the finish is elegant. The base is sturdy and has a felt bottom to protect your floor. The bulb doesn't get hot at all. So no heat displacement. And it has a dimmer switch, so you can control the brightness. It's a wonderful lamp, with room for improvement. The cost at the time of this review seems a little high due to quality control issues, but you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer lamp at a better cost.

Pretty - But Huge
This lamp comes well packaged. All the pieces are fit into foam, nice and snug. I think our UPS guy could have tossed this off the truck without doing any damage. (Not that I'm suggesting that as a delivery method.)Assembly was simple, particularly for me, since all I did was watch. My husband put it together in less than 10 minutes. The rose copper tone is quite pretty, though shinier than I expected. The base is solid and heavy. This lamp is not going to topple over. The light is dimmable, which is a feature I really like. There's a round switch on the base that you turn, so the dimming feature has many levels.Once assembled, I went into a fit of laughter. Not because the lamp is ugly or at all funny looking, but because it looks ridiculous in my house. I mean, this thing is enormous. I have a small ranch with 8-foot ceilings. The top of the lamp almost hits our ceiling! And the arm extends way out. It looks like I stole a lamp from a giant's castle, or put a regular lamp in a dollhouse. I would not suggest buying this unless your ceilings are at least 10 feet. A big room with a vaulted ceiling would probably be best. You need a lot of space and a lot of height, otherwise this lamp will look like a weird centerpiece in your room. I would love a smaller version of this for my house, but this one is just too big.

Large, some might say garish lamp.
The media could not be loaded. I did not have much trouble assembling this lamp. As one reviewer mentioned, there is way too much wire where the upright tubing pieces join together. But I was able to shove them down past the switch. The base is concrete and extremely heavy. Overall, I'd say the build is "OK," but not great. The globe, which is the most prominent part of the lamp, could have used more extensive polishing before the copper-colored paint was applied. You can definitely see some uneven spinning marks in it from the manufacturing process. No doubt some are more (or less) smooth than others.Whether or not you like this lamp is of course a personal choice. My wife likes it-I want to paint it some less obtrusive color. As you can see in the video, wherever you put it it will be a looming presence unless you have a very large room with modern decor. if there is one word that does not apply to this lamp, it is "understated."I know it's easy and tempting to give something five stars when you get it for free, but at this price I would expect a better finished product.

Highly recommended---very versatile lighting source
This is a really nice lamp. Seems to me that it would go with just about any interior design theme because of the colors. The rose/copper color is very generic I think. The base to this lamp is very heavy. Installation instructions recommend that it is a two man job. I would definitely agree with that. There is a light bulb that goes with the lamp that is well hidden so don't throw the packaging away before finding it. It is recessed into some of the cardboard to insure that it doesn't break during shipment. The shade is large and can be rotated around so that you can direct your lighting onto the appropriate location.I enjoy having this lamp in my bedroom. I do a lot of reading and needlework in that room.
