great for 30-55 year olds. Before that you won't listen. After that, it doesn't have enough data

Important book that should be required reading for every young man.
Retired now but my work was consulting men in the workplace most of my life. I discovered this book not long after I began my career, and it was helpful beyond measure. So many of the deeper issues that men face (and being men, usually alone) are addressed and made easier by this book. Easier because it gives the reassurance that you are not alone, you are not crazy, and in fact you are healthily developing into the mature man you are meant to be. The reassurance has power because the book is the result of very professional social science research carefully executed over a remarkable swath of time.

For ages 40 and below.
No part speaks to beyond 40 or 50, and certainly not what to expect from ones 60's +.

The book provided me with an accurate conceptual framework of adult development. It is systematic, straightforward yet deep and insightful. I found its approach of combining between theory and real case studies particularly helpful in apprehending the different facets of adult development. On a personal level, the book helped me analyse, understand and re-frame my own past development phases, the current one (The age 30 transition) and have insights in what might be my life in the future and how I can prepare myself to it.It was a pleasure to read it and I'm looking forward to re-read it again and again. No doubt, the book influenced me in many ways and yet others I shall discover as time goes by.

Deep but accessible
Robert Bly says "Men are deep." Levinson demonstrates the truth of that. He further makes the concepts of male development accessible and understandable. His premise is not that men are broken, and therefore need fixing, but rather that male behavior can be understood developmentally, as they pass through their predictable phases of growth. I especially recommend this book to every woman who has a man she feels must change.

Can’t get the hours I spent on this book back...
I tried really hard to pull some valuable nuggets from this but sadly it is so completely formed through the lense of a different time that even the conclusions that the author makes seem likely wrong or worse misleading. There’s a kind of taxonomy and language the author tries to wrap around every facet of mens aging and the reader has to spend so much time trying to understand his weird methodology that they can’t really discern a message or meaning beyond it. It’s very “proudly” written but the content upon which this pride is based feels like it was made up. It’s an entirely heteronormative perspective which honestly was even weird back then. Especially when it was written! I wish I hadn’t invested the time in this book - it really was not helpful.

Great for bookshelf but not top 20
Great informative book but definitely a bit on the dry side. Good for the shelf but not exactly one of my top 20.

great book
I ordered this book for a college assignment. The library at college had limited literature and as my course was Level 5 BTEC I needed to go more indepth. This had all the information I needed and more. Fantastic information, and an easy read.
