Joan Wulff's Dynamics of Fly Casting: From Solid Basics to Advanced Techniques by Miracle Productions

This is by far the best fly casting video available taught by the absolute best teacher. As a fly fishing guide, my skill at casting has to be outstandingly good, and studying this video has brought me up to that level. It's not a video you just watch once, it's a resource that can help guide your growth and refinement as a fly caster and fisher. Joan Wulff was national casting champion for many years, outperforming men in a mostly male- dominated sport. I have looked at Mel Kreiger's videos and read his books, and seen Lefty Kreh'a videos. Joan could out cast them both, and her technique is far better than either of them. Her approach to casting- and to teaching casting- is the absolute best. She was a senoir citizen when she recorded this video, yet she casts at great distance with elegance. Watching her cast shows me that casting a fly line is about grace and timing, not about brute force. It's money well spent to get this video. A more- expensive fly rod won't make you a better caster, but studying this video will. I can out cast most people using a mid-priced medium-action fly rod, and I have Joan Wulff to thank for that. When I start casting, the other guides put their fly rods down. Get this video and study it. It's worth it.

I have great respect for Joan Wulff and her teaching methods for Fly Casting. She is an excellent instructor and explains it in a way that anyone who wants to learn can learn from her. I bought this DVD for my younger brother who is just now learning to cast a fly rod. There is a companion book that you should also consider written by Joan... it not only adds onto this DVD in knowledge but in it she has colored pictures of the exact mechanics you need to master the many casts using in this sport. The book is helpful so you can see it better. Almost every Fly Line I use is the Royal Wulff Triangular Taper line. I have seven of them. All I can say it is incredible to cast it. It almost roll casts by itself. It'sanother of Joan's products and I love it.

I learn much better from watching instead of reading. So this dvd was perfect for me. You will save yourself so much trouble and frustration by watching this dvd in the beginning stages of learning to cast rather then waiting and doing so many thing wrong over and over. When you could have watch this dvd, and started the right way from the beginning. Just watching through the dvd one time corrected several mistakes and taught me new casting techniques. You will have to get out there and practice them to make it work though. this was originally a vhs, and the last 2 chapters of the dvd would not play for me, but I don't care because the rest of the dvd was so good. The last to chapters don't show you any new techniques. The dvd starts off just like it says with the basics, and eventually takes you through to the much more advanced techniques, like double hauling. This dvd will either teach you how to cast, or really help improve the casting abilities you already have.

I don't know why, but the DVD doesn't work properly.The DVD cuts off during play.Maybe it's because it's been a long time since it was made.And there doesn't seem to be anything new about it.

This could have five stars easily if it hadn't been for all the product placement and then the blatant adverts. I don't understand why I have to deal with ads when I paid for a DVD. If it was a free vid, then, yeah, okay. Still and all, it is a great video. Everything is clearly described, then demonstrated, often several times from several angles. Don't get me wrong. It ain't easy. You'll have to watch this many, many times and practice a lot before it sinks in. Ms. Wulff's basic technique, though, is easy to learn, easy to master: Pick up, snap, drift. The secret is when and how long to do each step. It's both easier and harder than you'd expect. But the result is worth it.

After receiving a fly fishing combo for Father's day, I knew that I would need some instruction to successfully learn how to change from spinning gear. I took some classes from a local fly shop but realized I wouldn't remember everything I was taught as time went on. This video not only keeps that instruction fresh when I need a refresher but also teaches more advanced techniques which can be practiced to make you a better caster. Joan Wulff is a great teacher and is a personal inspiration to my wife who also started this new journey with me.Recommend to anyone who needs starting instruction and also anyone wanting to learn more advanced casting techniques. Also great as a reference between seasons or anytime techniques need to be relearned.

Wulff teaches an older style of casting that has been surpassed by better principles taught by guys like Lefty Kreh and Ed Jaworowski. The "Power snap" is not a good description for what should be happening when doing the forward cast. Power should be applied from slow to fast evenly. I personally did not benefit from her DVD. There are better teachers out there. I also include Orvis and many other casting schools. I'm not aware of many teachers using the Wulff method outside of her school. I regret wasting my money on this DVD. Save your money and go straight to other better teachers. Just because she makes it work for her does not mean it will for you. There are lots of casting styles that work for people and in a sense all of them can work but some basic principles still apply that can lead the student to a more sound casting style. My evaluation comes after several years of working on my casting. There is no "Power snap". power should be a smooth acceleration with no "snap", just a gradual application of power from slow to fast.

Joan Wulff is one of the finest casting teachers out there.Apart from the slightly long intro, this is a great DVD.Clear demonstrations and good sound quality.A great dvd to use to improve casting.Many different casts demonstrated.
