I suppose you can use either way. I have been using this is a eye khol liner , which works very well. It is soft enough to draw a line underneath the eye smoothly without dragging I would say it is a mid brown, not a dark brown. Hope this helps.

No it's not suitable as an eyeshadow in my opinion.
