Review: Works as Advertised - Been using this guy for about a year now. It's solid and supports all the stuff they say it does. I'm using a dell desktop for server with Debian, getting 10Gb transfer speeds. ZFS is rock solid, zero errors ever. Only thing I wish for is it auto powered on after power loss. Cooling is not very good. I bought a $10 external fan and keep the door open all the time. The noise of the fan at high speed is awful so I put it on level 2 (of 3) in this configuration. Just fine for my closet home server on a budget. It's also a bit rickety without making me nervous, just strong enough I guess. It's not all metal like some. But it has it where it counts as Han Solo has said.
Review: A Fantastic Upgrade! Mediasonic Continues to Impress! - I've been a loyal Mediasonic customer for years, having owned an older version of their 4-bay hard drive enclosure, which I absolutely loved. It was a workhorse, reliable, and served my storage needs perfectly. When I saw the Mediasonic USB 3.2 4 Bay 3.5” SATA Hard Drive Enclosure DAS (HF7-SU31C) with USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps Type C, I knew it was time for an upgrade, and I'm so glad I did! This new enclosure takes everything I appreciated about the older model and elevates it. The USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps Type C connection is a game-changer. Data transfer speeds are incredibly fast, making backups and large file transfers feel instantaneous. I'm currently using it with 24TB HDDs, and it handles them flawlessly. Setup was a breeze, just like with my previous Mediasonic enclosure. The build quality is solid, and the design is sleek and efficient. It runs quietly, and the drives stay cool even under heavy use. If you're looking for a reliable, high-speed, and well-built external hard drive enclosure, look no further. Whether you're upgrading like me or buying your first, the Mediasonic HF7-SU31C is an outstanding choice. Highly recommend!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: has anyone tried 4tb hard drives in this unit? it states it supports it**
A: Yes: WD Red 4TB, Linux, Fedora 20, GPT partition table, USB3, Intel NUC, the whole capacity of the drive shows up, no problems. Here's the smart data from the drive:=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===Model Family: Western Digital Red (AF)Device Model: WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0Serial Number: WD-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXLU WWN Device Id: 5 0014ee 25e8d978cFirmware Version: 80.00A80User Capacity: 4,000,787,030,016 bytes 4.00 TBSector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physicalRotation Rate: 5400 rpmDevice is: In smartctl database for details use: -P showATA Version is: ACS-2 (minor revision not indicated)SATA Version is: SATA 3.0, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 3.0 Gb/s)Local Time is: Sat Aug 30 12:38:41 2014 PDTSMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.SMART support is: EnabledFYI, I used "hdparm -J" to set the idle3 timeout to 120 seconds. It did not brick the drive and appeared to work; however, I will express the strong caveat that is a dangerous operation.# hdparm -J /dev/sdddev/sdd: wdidle3 = 120 secs (or 13.2 secs for older drives)

**Q: Is there any way to make these units turn on after a power fail w/o pressing the button? I tried the 3 sync modes and regardless of what the attached server does it seems I have to manually press the power on button to get these to start responding after a power failure (USB-3).**
A: A comment to Abi and Phillip on chaining UPS units: I think the issue is total current draw, and usually if someone is adding another UPS, they plan to draw that much more current through the system, and that would indeed be bad. In general, it is good advice not to chain UPS or surge power strips, given how people normally just keeping plugging things in until all outlets are occupied.

But... if Abi is disciplined and only plugs the one thing into that chained UPS that otherwise would occupy a plug on the first UPS, I'm not seeing the problem. Maybe Abi should tape over or toddler-plug the remaining outlets on the chained UPS as a reminder to avoid dangerous current draw situations? The total load on the first UPS then is almost unchanged (modulo the power overhead of the chained UPS itself), and if there is some reserve capacity on the first UPS, that shouldn't be a problem. Is there some other consideration I am missing here?

**Q: If I install 4 x 4TB drives on this unit and connect it to my computer, I see 4 new USB hdds in my PC or just one big drive?.**
A: If you just install the drives and power on, they will show up as separate drives. If you're using eSata, you can setup a RAID configration. (I use 3-3tb drives in raid 5) You can also use Windows Storage spaces to 'unite' the individual drives into one drive. Raid is faster though.

**Q: has anyone tried putting a 2.5" 1 TB HDD in this thing? Do I have to use an 3.5" adapter or can I just plug in the 2.5" HDD?**
A: Note: A Normal adapter/brace will not work that you would used for mounting a 2.5 in a PC case. The connections for the power and data transfer are fixed solid to the board in the back of the case. A normal adapter will leave the 2.5 drive well short of the connections and you will need to run cabled for the power and data, very very short cables. Additionally, the metal plate that functions to hold the drives in place will not fit snugly with the 2.5 drive adapter meaning it will float around in there just a little to make some noise. Due to these reasons I would suggest only using it for 3.5 drives as they fit perfectly in the drive bays.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Either break off the front door or keep it open to prevent drive overheating.
*by J***E on June 18, 2018*

Good: * This unit does work on USB 3.1 and has really fantastic transfer rates. * The case is beautiful and looks very modern * The drive trays fit snugly enough where there is not any noticeable rattle or noise from the hard disks Bad: * The makers clearly told the engineers to get lost and opted to make this pretty over functional. There is a fan and an air outlet in the back, but there is NO venting at all in the front to let air in to flow over the drives. I mean, come on Mediasonic!. Radiant cooling only works when air can get in, pass over the drives, and the exit the case. That process cannot occur when there is no air inlet. * Two drives quickly overheated in this case with the fan set to "Auto". The case was in an air-conditioned room at about 75 F. The drives both reached over 110F and trigged SMART monitoring failures. * The only solution to the airflow issue is to open the front door or break it off. In fact, I have popped my door open with a CD jewel case. * With the front door open and the fan turned up manually, it does a great job of cooling the drives. Unfortunately, the front door open also makes the drives and fan noise pretty loud. In summary, it works great and does everything it promises, but only when the front door is kept open. I plan to take the door off and cut space for a screw-on fan grill and screen. Though, if I need any more of these, I will spend more and get a better designed product, such as the ORICO Aluminum 4 Bay that is not that much more. Alternatively, the older Mediasonic design is much better because it actually has air flow inlets in the front. Update: After use for a while of use, I can say it does a good job of keeping the drives cool with the door open. Most critically, the USB 3.1 controller seems stable and works well in Linux. I tested both kernels 4.9.x (Debian Stretch) and 4.16.x (Debian Buster) on an AMD X470 chipset. So, I am raising my rating to 4 stars, since it is functional, even if they screwed up by not putting a vent in the door.
