Candela Obscura Core Rulebook

This book is gorgeous, the art, the embossing. I’ve already had two chances to play with my group and we can’t wait to play again!!! I bought a second copy to give to a GM friend of mine for Christmas. I’m also using the Demi plane tools to keep track of our game online.

My interest was piqued when I saw the only review was 1-star, because it was "Preachy" about things like cultural appropriation. Went and bought a copy immediately.Always a good sign that a game is emotionally intelligent and compassionate about the players and their shared experience when the neckbeards start screaming "snowflake". XDThis is Lovecraft vibes if Lovecraft hadn't been a xenophobic manbaby.The illuminated dice core system is super neat, and will probably replace Call of Cthulhu in my game rotation. The game play focuses on non-combat narratives, with the GM needing minimal dice, similar to monster of the week.Definitely worth picking up.

The system's fine. But the preachy notes advising players how not to play an RPG the wrong way really don't belong in a TTRPG core rulebook. This book includes a lecture on "cultural appropriation" as just one example. Despite .0005% of people IRL suffering gender dysphoria, approximately 33% of the population if people in Candela Obscura suffer the mental condition based on the rulebook.
