A Call Girl [DVD]

This is a fascinating film about a woman's struggles to make her way in the world, while also seeking to find some meaning in life itself. The movie presents a rather bleak portrayal of contemporary society, as well as touching upon the futility of searching for purpose. The story concerns a beautiful, 23 year old Slovenian woman who leaves her less-than idyllic rural home town and moves to the city in order to study at university. To makes ends meets, she works as an independent escort - a high class prostitute - visiting men in their hotel rooms. She engages in sex in a purely perfunctory manner, clearly finding no real enjoyment in such goings-on, as middle-age, over-weight men use her body to fulfil their lustful desires. Given her looks, she's in much demand - and this impacts upon the pimps in the city, who are determined to control her business. And, unfortunately, one of her clients - an important politician - dies while in her company. She's now on the run, from both the police and the pimps. And in desperation she returns home ... Nina Ivanisin plays her role - as an escort - brilliantly. What's especially interesting is how she conveys a sense of detachment and disillusionment from the world around her. As the character is forced to endure being sexually used, she separates herself from others - feeling nothing. This impacts upon her relations with those close to her, as her purpose in life becomes - from her standpoint - essentially meaningless. Watching Ivanisin portray this character is reason enough to see the film. On the one hand, I found myself attracted to this young and beautiful woman - who presents herself as a sex object. Yet, on the other hand, I found such feelings of attraction to be misplaced and wrong - as, clearly, this woman is a victim in need of support. This tension presents a fascinating dynamic, and one that leads to a sense of unease and disquiet. As such, the director of this movie succeeds in drawing-in the viewer - thereby demonstrating an ability to create an engaging film. The movie is in Slovene, with English subtitles. It certainly wont be to everyone's taste. If you're interested in European interpretations of the darker side of modernity, and in portrayals of contemporary prostitution, then I highly recommend this film. It's not intended to titillate, and if you're simply after a movie about sex then I suggest you look elsewhere. This is a character-driven movie, with little dialogue, aimed at making the viewer ponder what it means to be 'a call girl'.

This is possibly the best film about prostitution ever made. Sasha is a student who supplements her income by sleeping with strangers for money. Sasha is all business, the sex depicted is about as erotic as checking your online bank account. Sasha is only trying to make a living. Her one love is her father, and as the story develops there is a growing sympathy for Sasha, and pretty much open contempt for those around her, who are worse than she is. Sasha is not shown is a sympathetic light. She is a manipulative, lying, money-driven woman, but her approach to life is so deadpan and dolorous it is difficult to dislike her The film gets five stars because, despite its low budget and potentially salacious subject matter, it is totally character driven, we are drawn in by the fantastic performance of Nina Ivanisin as Sasha, and her relationship with her father. A very good film, and a brutally honest, deadpan depiction of sex for money

A twenty-three year old Slovakian, student Aleksandra (Nina Ivanisin), turns to prostitution to fund a lifestyle that appears to include cigarettes (notice the lighting-up ritual of sliding the length of the cig along the lips) and an apartment she may call her own. The girl exhibits a dour countenance most of the time (does she ever smile?) as if life is just too much for her, making you wonder at times why men find her attractive – well, not really!! It would appear that her coming into this world was one of those accidents that fate bestows upon millions of wretched young souls. She visits her father from time to time (a place of refuge), now separated from the mother (we get only a brief glimpse of the lady when her daughter pays a passing call), and living a short train journey from the big city. The father is a caring, mild, manic depressive gentleman well into middle-age, who is attempting to resurrect a small band of players strumming and yelling into microphones that is all the rage in the cotemporary world of popular music making. It is not at all clear exactly what Aleksandra is actually a student of, beyond her sexual exploits. In fact the whole thing rolls along seemingly without purpose, punctuated by crisis after crisis, against the backdrop of city goings on that makes one ask if this is what civilization is really all about and, if so, is it what we really aspire to? Perhaps the answer is there, in the final few minutes of the film. Some English is spoken, but most of us may have to rely upon subtitles in order to follow the dialogue.

Not good story line

A seriously good film,thoughtfully done and at the same time educational and demonstrating how easily it is to slip down to the life of crime. Very ,Very Good.

its that good we fell asleep.....

I saw "Slovenian Girl" (as this film was titled at the time) in January of 2010 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. It is spot-on about post-Soviet life in Eastern Europe, where the vacuum created when the Soviet lifestyle was replaced by capitalism is filled by amoral activity aimed at material gain at any cost. The Slovenian actress in the title role is amazing -- able to show her duplicity and manipulating ways merely by a look in her eyes. The supporting cast is equally good. Excellent all 'round!

Muy buena película, todo llegó muy bien y en buen estado, se tardó más de los esperado pero solo fue por unos días.

There is no point in my writing of the storyline as most everyone else has already done just that. But needing to add my two cents... This movie is not titillating as the title might lead you to suspect. Rather it is an interesting study, as a film novel, of a girl who has made a series of bad choices without thinking of consequences and learns a life lesson. The outcome is more fortunate than what could have possibly happened, and it was well acted out - I think the cast well chosen and the story well played. My time was not wasted and as long as you're not looking for sexy scenes or a date flick, I suspect your time will not be wasted either. I liked it enough to pick up a copy for my own library, although you may wish to rent it before dropping harder change, just in case your taste isn't as mine. But give it a try.

This film is from Film Movement so right away you know it is an art-house piece. And if you are expecting plenty of sex scenes and nudity you will be disappointed. The film is about the life of a young Slovenian woman, attending college, who turned tricks to support the ownership of an apartment in downtown Ljubljana. She faced a variety of clients in hotel rooms, and the threat of pimps. It is a watchable film but not a great one.
