A decent outdoor watch
The watch is easy to read, slightly difficult to set up, but for an inexpensive outdoor watch it works. Don’t expect a smart watch.

Lots of functionality...
...in a sub $100 watch.Overall, this watch offers the basic functions you would expect at this price, plus a few more.It has alternate time zones for 28 major cities, countdown (from a maximum of 100 hours), stopwatch (with lap timing), hour chimes and up to five alarms. In addition, it offers weather and navigation functions to include air temp, barometer and altitude data. I found the barometer to be in agreement with known good devices, and found the altitude and temperature data to be less trustworthy. This is a somewhat complicated interface, and you'll want to spend time with the user guide before operating in an "adventure" setting. Do yourself (and your eyes) a favor: while you might stash the include guide with your adventure gear kit...go to the Armitron website, and download the human-friendly full page print size guide

Great Watch
This watch was a perfect gift for my uncle who has been looking for a sports watch that actually was waterproof. This thing has so much going on that even he couldn't believe it. He loved that it had so much to do with the weather so that he always knew what was going on. He also likes that it fits great and doesn't catch on his arm hair. It's an awesome watch and he loves it.

Swiss Army Knife Multi-function Watch--But Far from Accurate in Some Measurements
Armitron Adventure Men's AD/1011YLW Sport Watch is the Swiss Army Knife of watches. It reminds me in a way of the popular Casio ProTrack digital watch series. (I happen to own a ProTrack and like it very much.) With the Armitron Adventure in one watch you get an altimeter, barometer, thermometer, five individually set alarms, stop watch, countdown timer, and world time. (Whew!)Amazon claims that the watch has an “adjustable LCD contrast” but I couldn’t find anything to adjust the LCD contrast except for an adjustable backlight. I don’t think that this can really count as a contrast adjustment.I really like a watch that has a world time function. However, the Armitron Adventure Men's AD/1011YLW Sport Watch disappointed me by omitting UTC (Universal Coordinated Time–the old GMT.) The world time does have London time but this is not the same as UTC as London time varies an hour during Daylight Savings Time while UTC is fixed. This may seem to be a nit, but much of my work involves international communications and UTC is extremely important to coordinating our communications. The measurement functions in the watch were way off. The manuals says that if “the temperature and/or air pressure readings are incorrect, you can calibrate the pressure sensor.” I followed the instructions to do the calibration procedure using a calibrated thermometer. I did this twice just to be sure. After calibration, I compared the readings of the barometer with the local National Weather Service and the Casio ProTrack and the altitude with the ProTrack and a current USGS 1:24K topographic map. Here’s what I found:Barometer (inHg):Armitron: 32.477Casio: 30.05NWS (local): 30.02Altitude (MSL):Armitron: 2198 feetCasio: 920 feetUSGS Topo Map: 994 ftUnless it is marketing, what good is having readings of this nature if they are not accurate? No one expects a watch–especially one costing $95 to have precision measurements. However, it would be nice if the Armitron Adventure Men's AD/1011YLW Sport Watch was at least in the ballpark–especially for altitude measurements. The plastic watch band while not uncomfortable to wear, is made from that rubbery plastic material that feels and looks cheap. True, these are so called “adventure” watches, so a sturdy, weather resistant band is best. However, these bands really look cheap. The watch was running when it arrived. I know that watch batteries can last for years, but I much prefer to start the watch running when it arrives as opposed to having it run while it is being stored and shipped. The manual is adequate, but cheaply printed. Due to the packaging, I found it difficult to get printed instructions out. They are housed in a little plastic container on the bottom that is glued in to the watch plastic box. They almost need pried out. Once you do get them out, you find that the instructions as the typical cheaply printed tiny font variety so common with watch manufacturers. Fortunately, a humanly readable copy of the manual is available for free download on the Armitron watch web site. However, I am tired of tiny printed, multi-language generic instructions that stand in for real instructions.

Great Sporty Look But Flawed
The Armitron Adventure watch is good-looking but has a major design flaw. Please note that I am not an adventurer but I like upscale designs. It is solidly water-resistant when used in the shower. We are in the Midwest, no ocean; Lake Michigan is probably too cold now. The watch keeps good time and the alarm works. It has a barometer and weather ‘station’ which is rather cool (but I found it ended up easier to check out that kind of info on my iPhone). The watch is good-looking with its yellow band and black face yet the watch face itself is rather large in diameter; it’s a watch for someone with a larger wrist. I can wear it, however.Additionally, when I set up the watch (i.e. the time zone, day of week etc.) the instructions included with the watch were poorly worded and incredibly small in print. Not only did I have to read them a few times, I had to break out my magnifying glass to do so. I did not go to their website, I should not have to do that, instructions should be clear and concise. It is so frustrating to access clear directions, which appear to be generic, in any language. It cheapens the product.BUT, the biggest problem of with this watch is that its actual face is so DIFFICULT to SEE that it’s maddening. I can only clearly see the digital display at a very specific angle like when it is angled towards me as opposed to either tilted too far away from me or titled towards me. In other words, if this watch is not properly aligned under my gaze, the entire digital display fades and the time looks like its 88:88. Activating the light, which illuminates the face for 3 seconds, helps with the ability to see the face more clearly but even with that light on, the wearer still will need to keep the watch angled in just the proper way. Also, there is an inevitable drain on the battery every time the battery is used. All in all, not a good bang for the buck.
