16-Bit Legends Reborn: Exploring Demons of Asteborg and Astebros on Evercade
If you love your pixel art dark, your action fierce, and your nostalgia with a side of demons, the Evercade double pack of Demons of Asteborg and Astebros delivers in spades. These two games serve as retro-flavored love letters to the golden age of 16-bit platformers, but with just enough modern seasoning to keep things fresh and challenging. Originally released for modern platforms and retro consoles alike, Demons of Asteborg and Astebros now make their debut on Evercade, the cartridge-based retro console that keeps proving physical media isn’t dead yet. Whether you’re a fan of Genesis-style slashers or roguelite dungeon crawlers, this cartridge has a little something for everyone, as long as you like your monsters pixelated and your soundtracks drenched in gothic synths. Let’s break it down: Demons of Asteborg: If Castlevania, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, and ActRaiser had a monster child and dropped it into a cartridge, it would look a lot like Demons of Asteborg. You play as Gareth, a royal knight on a demon-slaying mission through cursed forests, crumbling towers, and lava-filled catacombs. The gameplay combines swordplay, spells, and precise platforming with just the right level of difficulty—tough but fair. The game doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it perfects the vibe. Think chunky sprites, dramatic cutscenes, and just enough lore to keep you invested. You’ll earn upgrades, fight memorable bosses, and (if you’re like me) die often but come back stronger. Visually, the game is gorgeous. The environments are lovingly detailed, and the animation is fluid for a retro-styled title. On the Evercade, it runs beautifully with crisp, saturated visuals that make the most of the handheld’s screen or big-screen mode. Astebros: A prequel to Demons of Asteborg, Astebros is a roguelite that shifts the tone and tempo. Instead of gothic doom and side-scrolling structure, you get randomized dungeons, three playable characters (each with unique abilities), and an addictive gameplay loop where every death leads to progress. It plays a bit like a fusion of Rogue Legacy and Wonder Boy, with each run bringing new gear, new layouts, and more coin to spend on permanent upgrades. The pixel art is still top-tier, but this one leans into dungeon variety, treasure hunting, and procedural surprises. Despite being a roguelite, it still feels very rooted in classic game design. If Demons is your Saturday night blockbuster, Astebros is your endlessly rewatchable cult hit. Combat is snappy, the weapons feel distinct, and while the difficulty ramps up quickly, the ability to level up and tweak your build between runs gives you plenty of tools to experiment with. The Evercade handles it all seamlessly, making this a perfect pick-up-and-play title. Final Thoughts: The Demons of Asteborg / Astebros Evercade collection is one of the strongest third-party additions to the platform. It captures the spirit of the 16-bit era while refusing to be shackled by its limitations. These games were designed with love, and it shows in everything from the spritework to the soundtrack. Whether you’re an old-school gamer looking for a fresh challenge or a new fan discovering why everyone keeps talking about the glory days of the Sega Genesis, this cartridge is well worth your time. Expect tough battles, moody environments, and a whole lot of charm packed into two ambitious indie titles. They don’t make ‘em like they used to—except when they absolutely do!

Flawless 16-bit action for your Evercade!
2 wonderful 16-bit action platformers for the price of one is what you’re getting with this collection! If you enjoy “Metroidvainia” style games with a bit of mid evil style, this collection is for you! Both games of the series play amazingly well on my Evercade Vs.! I can’t speak for the handheld Evercade versions, but I would imagine they look and play just as well as the console version. I can’t recommend this collection highly enough if you’re a fan of action platformers!
