A quick internet search suggested the chafer grub as a culprit. I dug out a few and this confirmed the infestation. Nemasys' chafer grub killer is a life product and needs cool storage. I used it after just a few days well before the expiry date in late March and the chafer grubs appear to have disappeared. I started reseeding after about 6 weeks of application and the lawn in this patch looks healthy. I followed the instructions and concentrated at the marginal areas of the affected patch. One thing to note is that I found it hard to disperse the product effectively with my plastic watering can as the water holes got blocked off too easily. It remains to be seen if the grubs stay away but I am happy to retreat at the first signs of further infestation.
