Q: Will this work as a personal item without being considered a carry on, on Frontier?

From what I'm reading online, Frontier considers anything over 14 x 18 x 8 inches or larger to be a carry on (meaning it needs to be placed in the bins overhead and not under the seat in front of you). The 30L bag (which I ordered for my 17.3" laptop) measures 18.5 x 12.2 x 7.88 inches, which would be within the Frontier guidelines if it's not overpacked. I've traveled on American (also 14 x 18 x 8), Alaskan (22 x 14 x 9), United Airlines (10 x 17 x 9), and Delta while using this 30L bag and have never been asked to put it in the overhead bin. I've had it fully packed to the point that it barely fit under the seat in front of me, but it's never been an issue (besides having way less foot room). Hope this helps.

Q: what is the weight of the backpack (50L version)?

I don’t know the exact weight but I used it for a 2 days business trip and it was not lite when filled. There are a lot of pockets but very hard to use all of them because the pockets conflict with each other. I would look for a different bag

Q: does it fold flat when empty?

It is collapsible about as flat as a case with several compartments can be.

Q: Does it have two side pockets for water bottle and umbrella?

So this listing is a bit misleading, as all the sizes have different side pocket configurations. The 50L one I have had only one zippered side pocket, and no "attached" side pockets. The zippered pocket is fairly shallow, and can hold something 10" long and 3" in diameter and still close without issues.
