This book simply is not that good
So I was anxious to get this book being a long time collector of Chinese costume an textiles. I perhaps foolishly thought there would be more examples from the V & A mot previously published. The scho9olarship is not very good, the organization of the book is really illogical... Showing Antique imperials pieces and then a 20th century cheongsam is hard to understand.. should have been organized by date... it's all over the place....The section on footwear didn't show any bound feet shoes ... only Manchu shoes.... for a custom that lasted over 900 years they perhaps could have given at least one photo? overall a big disappointment...

So much to browse and study.
I finally got my hands on "Chinese Dress in Detail," after a long wait. Sau Fong Chan demonstrates her dedication to documenting the art -- yes the art -- of Chinese clothing design through the centuries. Sau Fong's stewardship of the subject matter from her post at London's V&A museum is apparent on every page. She examines Chinese dress literally from head to toe with highly detailed photos and digestible descriptions of the items. Paging through the book is much like a walk through a museum, so much to browse and study.

Excellent insight into an important Chinese Court Costume Collection.
This much anticipated book which delves into the V&A's exceptional collection of Chinese Court Costume is a valuable addition to the library of anyone with an interest in the topic. As a lecturer in this subject I found the text informative, and very readable, with, as you would expect, high quality illustrations.Thoroughly recommended - my only disappointment is there was no exhibition to coincide with the publication of this book.

Totally a waste of time and money
Who cares about these late Qing, republic and modern examples in this book? Where are these rare and important Ming and early Qing robes of the imperial court?
