Is this container airtight?

I don't think it's airtight but does have a good seal. The tea comes in a bag inside the canister. I just keep that closed with a clip to help keep it fresh. It's a really nice container and the tea is so good.

can this tin be used for loose leaf tea?

Absolutely. I have a whole herd of these and often put different kinds of tea in them when the bags are gone. The loose tea keeps well.
