Excellent product. But no instruction hence 4 stars
This is a serious piece of kit. It is well designed, very steady and stable, also being cast iron very heavy. Made in Alsace, France by a firm renowned for cast iron cookware it came very well packed but alas no instructions! Now, I have used fondues before so may I venture a few thoughts? This is a product for cheese fondues. If you want to have meat and veg fondues which are morsels cooked in hot oil dont buy this item, its not deep enough and there is no splatter guard. VonChef do a nice cast iron model in red which could be dual purpose. Cheese fodues often use porcelain or stoneware pans.. Usually these end up cracking and breaking in two, you need to soak this type for a couple of hours like the Spanish terracotta cooking bowls before use but they are infinitely lighter to use.You should cook your fondue on the hob in a standard saucepan and then take the saucepan (ensuring all young children, dogs and moving people are out of your way - scalding hot cheese on the move is a danger). You then pour the mixture into the bowl of the assembled fondue at the table. The burner is designed to be adjusted to keep the fondue to temperature. If you try to move the fondue in this pan from the cooker, you will have an unbearable weight to lift in a very hot pan which is difficult to carry. The handle will also be very hot, its a two handed job of a full heavy pan. Very awkward and not safe.Fondue parties can be fun, not suitable for very small children because of the risk of burning their mouths, likewise other vulnerable people. If they are old enough to cook and be safe around very hot pans and hot foods then go ahead! As said this pan is not suitable for oil fondues but it goes without saying even greater care must be taken with oil. When fonduing is over and people are well oiled in other ways the burner must be extingished if the diminshed oil is not to go on heating and combust.. Think chip pan fires! This fondue set comes with a gel burner, these are somewhat safer and less fumey to use. You need to purchase the gel separately. If you want to use methylated spirit ... And this is the only spirit you should use you will need a burner with a soaking pad and mesh.I am well pleased with my purchase and I think it will be put to good use. I see no reason why I shouldnt use the pan on the hob for braising meat in sauce, where I can dish up in situ. Hope this info is useful to newbies at fonduing - the chances are if you are Swiss or over 60 you will have fondued before. Incidently the Swiss do not fondue with oil and meat. There are lots of recipes for both types online.Since the base of this fondue is cast iron if you wash it or sponge it clean it must be dried thoroughly or it will rust. You might like to protect your table with a round wooden breadboard underneath it if you dont want your nice wooden dining table scratched. I would clean the pan in cold water to remove the cheese remains and use baking powder to clean ...treat as Le Creuset.Excellent quality for the money and after much research I went for this model. It arrived very promptly too , ahead of time. Given the draback of weight which is also a prom I would buy this product again but instructions should be supplied.

Not too cheesy!
The cacquelon, or fondue pot, is great: it's a good size and is very sturdy. It's on par with fondue pots I've eaten out of in restaurants in Switzerland. The base and the burner are so-so, but these items are much of a muchness (although the base is the right size for the pot). The forks, however, are very disappointing and should be replaced with a decent set of forks as soon as possible--hence four stars rather than five. The supplied forks should be considered starter forks, only for use in an emergency. The best thing to do with them is to give them to Oxfam as soon as you open the box.I would recommend ordering a sturdy set of Kuhn-Rikon forks at the same time as you order this fondue set, along with a couple of packets of gel fuel pods for the burner, because no fuel is included.

Great buy
Good afternoon,For the traditional fondue (cheese, of course) i.e. meaning 200 grams per person, it goes very well, in capacity for four people and it is a good buy. Use some quality silicone or dense tissue thick rag to take it from the oven to the table for the handle is open underneath and can surprise you for its weight and temperature. Please remember that it MUST be cleaned only full of cold water at the end of the feast, and the "day after" use a soft scrub even nylon with cold water.Never use any metallic and/or metallic brush and or washing products.Use only Hot water and a cotton rag to dry it before stockage.Cheers and enjoy it, cheap and very good for this use.RegardsJose G.

Missing forks
Looks good and seems sturdy, good value for money. However, I’m sure this is supposed to include 6 forks and mine arrived with none so have had to wait to be able to use it.

Very pleased
I choose this over a traditional ceramic pot that I have previously owned, as we now have an induction hob.it works exactly the same as a traditional pot and we are very happy with it!

A fantastic cast iron fondue set
I had looked around for a set for a while, but this pot has one of the largest diameters (21cm) I have seen, which makes it ideal for a dinner party. It's a lovely red colour, very easy to clean, and the forks are really sharp! Because the fuel sits quite closely to the bottom of the pan, it uses the heat efficiently, and the heat is retained by the cast iron. A great price, particularly compared to some of the French branded fondue sets on the market. I would definitely recommend this product if you need a fondu set!!

excellent all round
finally, and after months of searching and trialling / returning various other fondue sets we found this good quality one with a heavy and LARGE cast iron saucepan which IS big enough to mix / heat the cheese on the hob before moving it to the dining areaIt was only let down by the forks which were of the usual thin and cheapo 2 pronged type meaning the bread falls off but we purchased a set of Kuhn Rikon 32040 Fondue Forks so now have a top quality and practical fondue set........at last !
