Excellent strategy game that doesn't take long to play
Over the last couple years, I've been getting more into gaming, so I'm always on the lookout for a new one to try. I'll admit, the theme of this isn't up my alley. I'm not drawn to fantasy or wizardry/witchcraft kind of themes, but it just looked kind of cool to me. So I gave it shot and I'm really glad I did.Spellbook is a great game. It's easy to learn and it doesn't take long to play. With 2 players, we were getting through it in about 30 minutes or so, but that would obviously vary by the number of players and how long each player spends thinking. The rulebook is really well laid out and I don't think I was left with any questions after reading through and playing the first time. It really doesn't take long at all to get the hang of it.Although I said the theme itself didn't initially appeal to me, it's done quite nicely and fits the game perfectly. The components are good quality too. The little tokens (called "Materia") are acrylic and have a nice look and feel to them. There's a thematically printed drawstring pouch for the blind-drawing of the Materia tokens. And everything else except the spell cards are a good, heavy stock with smooth matte finish. My one minor gripe is that the spell cards could've been a bit nicer. They look amazing and have a smooth matte coating, but they're pretty thin and have sharp (ie. easily damageable) corners. So do you have to be into this theme to love this game? It's a bonus if you are, but no. Spellbook is a relatively fast-paced competitive strategy game that's chock full of choices to make. There's some luck thrown in too, of course (if you blind-draw Materia from the bag), but you'll spend most of your time figuring out which spell to go for next and/or whether you should "store" some Materia on your point board. And you'll make those decisions based on what Materia you're holding, what's available on the "Altar" and by what you think your opponent is up to.I really like this game and have already played in numerous time in the short time I've owned it. It's definitely got good replayability.

Decent engine builder
A well themed engine builder/resource management game. If you're into the theme, go for it.Component quality is pretty decent, the game and turns go by relatively quickly, and the aforementioned engine building and resource management aspects of the game are rather straight forward and uncomplicated.Note that it's more like playing solitaire with other people. There isn't a whole lot of interaction between players. The game does have replayability despite all players starting with the same spell cards at the beginning of the game. Your early draws take care of that aspect and influence the strategy you take to learn more spells and ultimately move toward the end game condition.

Lots of difficult decisions = a great game
I feel that some of the best games are ones that are easy to teach yet have layers of strategy and depth. Spellbook is one of those games. The components are few but high quality. The main component is set of "Materia" chips. This is like the game's currency. It allows you to purchase spells and comes in 7 colors and 3 different runes. Rather than making them out of cardboard, the company produced them out of acrylic and so they have a really nice look and feel to them. They no doubt will also stand up to frequent handling. The cards are large, easy to read and also high quality. Lastly, the bag that holds the Materia is well made and the cardboard "Altar" and discard bowls are satisfactory. The artwork on the "familiar" boards is awesome and adds a nice touch to the game's theming. While this game is accessible to nearly anyone willing to listen to a brief explanation of the rules, it is deeply satisfying for seasoned gamers. There is a LOT to focus on and there is a strong feeling of interconnectedness between the spells and the other game mechanisms. Decisions made can be excruciating because there is no shortage of them! You'll want to try and accomplish everything, but it seems that it is far better to pick and choose strategically. The game is setup to ease players into the classic style of play in three stages. This keeps the game fresh and unique each time it is played. And although I have not yet tried it, there is a solo mode of play that doesn't seem to get bogged down in performing dozens of AI procedures. It is pretty much the same game.Space Cowboys have been providing really solid games for years now and I have been purchasing them and enjoying them. Spellbook is a worthy addition into my game collection and will see a lot of use in the future.

Gorgeous Art and Good Design
To quote my 18 year old 'Everything about this game just looks cool.' Even the interior of the box where you're storing things has neat artwork inside of it, which is just a step beyond where they had to go, considering people wouldn't see inside the box before purchasing it usually. So to spend extra money on printing art in color for the interior was absolutely a choice to go with the overall motif of the game rather than an attempt at advertising itself. The core gameplay concept is easy enough to grasp, each player takes turns going through three phases of a 'day' - morning, noon, and night. Each phase has a native ability you can use, and as you progress through the game and learn spells, they have a phase they can be used in that offers you more options. We played our first game last night, and while it took longer than the anticipated 45 minutes, I believe a good deal of that can be attributed to the fact that my kiddo didn't read the rules before we started play, and instead read them when we first sat down to play.

Great Game
We have tons of games at my house, this is amongst my favorites. Easy to learn, hard to master, and pieces are high quality. Play time isn’t overly long either so you don’t feel like your “spending all day” playing one game. We end up playing a couple every time so I can sum it up by saying this game is great. If your on the fence, just do it you won’t be upset.
