Caran d'Ache844 Metal Mechanical Pencil 0.7mm - Black (844.009)

I have been using this brand and type of mechanical pencils for years. My favorite ever. Sturdy, durable, good quality. Strongly recommend

It looks and feels exactly like my 10 year old same model. I never lost the chrome top to the original model - although in recent months the top on my old one has started to loosen. As a graphic artist, the original pencil worked beautifully for ten years... for some reason.. and it might "fix," I was unable to reload the lead... so ...replacement. This is something I use all day, every day. It has to feel right, work right - even look right.

Very sturdy with rubbery galvanized metal of graphite nature. Has a good clearance while depressing the button. The cap is very deep when removed. Possibility of losing the cap is remote. Reveals a regular pencil eraser inside like those mostly found on Pentels. This metal pencil is about 60% to 70% the weight of its pen counterpart which is a surprise as it packs more mechanisms inside. I am assuming it is because the pen counterpart has a jumbo ink insert that contributes to the weight. No major lead breakage issues while writing. Again, very sturdy. The clip is very sturdy as well and has a good clearance so as to fit in thick pocket clothing. A high quality pencil.

Feels really nice, weight distribution feels great, center of gravity is ~78mm/3" from the tip, but feels really balanced at 12.5g, 2-4g lighter than the 849 pen. I find the clean and simple design incredibly attractive, but I do wish it was a tad longer than the ~5.25"/134mm.I added some heat shrink tube for a small increase in size and big increase in grip, but only for writing, for sketching I prefer it naked.The fixed lead pipe tip is a bit of a bummer, but its fine. its not as long as drafting pencils tend to be, so its fairly pocket safe, and is miles better than on a heavy rotring 600 which cant survive a single fallNext bummer is its only 0.7mm, the 0.5mm is japan market limited, and around 2x the price BUT you can swap mechanisms from another iconic mech pencil that does commonly come in 0.5mm as theyre the exact same size and tip style (i wont say what it is because then a bunch of people are gonna abuse amazon returns)Spare erasers are insane, it actually works nicely but cheapest I've seen is around $2 each BEFORE international shippingI think the closest one can get is a Zebra Del-guard eraser from jetpens, but i havent tried it. instead I cut off a 5mm piece from a sumo block eraser and shaved it until it fit.which brings me to my final gripe, these are friggin expensive for what they are. nothing fancy or complicated like a kurutoga, del-guard, or orenz, just a basic, aluminum body, clicky mechanical pencil in different colors. talk about a lazy design department. like so many other things today, seems like Caran D'ache is just relying on the cache their name holds, rather than actually doing anything. Don't get me wrong, the stuff is high quality, and looks good, but its so d*mn boring.

I love this pencil and I'd buy it any time again. In fact I did already buy it again, because I had to. I lost the other one I bought several years ago and no other mechanical pencil is comparable to this one. Works all the time and is sturdy to have it in you pants pockets without braking anything. The only mechanical pencil I know where you can use the eraser without pumping out the lead like crazy.

...but I got a little disappointed at the mechanism that extends the lead because I think it is a little sturdy, if I can say that. Anyway I think it is very nice, but the mechanism from the PENTELs are better.

I have countless mechanical pencils. Many Japanese and German brands with all the details and engineering. None of them really compare to the handling of this simple looking clutch pencil. It's all I use now. Be sure to get the 3mm lead from Caran D'Ache. There is a built in sharpener in the push button.

Lovely design, perfect shape, pleasant material, flawless mechanism...This is a top quality pencil that, for me, is way better than any other pencil I've ever used.

A pesar de mis reticencias de que el producto sea original Caran d'ache ya que el fabricante vende este modelo a 79$, amazon confirma que sí, y su precio 22€. Salvando mis reticencias, el producto es excelente, muy cómodo en el uso. Peso y ergonomía perfectos. Tal vez se trate que Caran d'ache comercializa por otras vías productos que no pasaron un control de calidad exigente. Pero pasa inadvertido. La presentación es otra cuestión, ya que Caran d'ache lo sirve en estuche y amazon no. En el caso del portaminas azul en particular, el color es un azul ultramar oscuro, no un azul eléctrico como muestra la fotografía, confiemos en que se trate solo de una cuestión de iluminación de la fotografía.
