Italic and Copperplate Calligraphy: The Basics and Beyond (Lettering, Calligraphy, Typography)

I have a library of calligraphy books and really did not need another. I bought this book as a reference book to go back and look at the basics even though I have been doing calligraphy for some time. The reason I bought it was because it was by Eleanor Winters who is such an amazing calligrapher. If anyone is looking to picking up a pen and learning calligraphy this is an excellent book to have.

Great guide to stimulate letter writing in any situation

I bought this along with another book for beginners. I learned calligraphy decades ago and wanted to relearn it. The beginner book was far better suited to my needs than this advanced book. I may start using this one some day, but it's not one to start with.

The Italics/Copperplate pairing was a good idea since these are the two most popular first hands of broad edge and pointed pen calligraphy. The first chapters would help someone deciding which hand to start with. I don't agree with the authors idea of "why not do both at once.." Time and lots of practice is what is needed to begin to become comfortable with and proficient in any hand. By diluting the amount of time spent on each it would extend by quite a bit the length of time needed to begin to go to the next level.Aside from that minor quibble, I think this book would help anyone to get into the intermediate level with some solid skills. There was lots of useful ideas in ways to study my pursuit of Italics. I'm still at the advanced beginner stage, but time, practice and useful books like this will get me further along.

This book expands on the basics of Italic and Copperplate and includes an introduction into flourishing and Illumination. I particularly like the way , in all of her books, she shows examples of poorly spaced or incorrectly penned letters. She explains why they are not correct and how to correct them. . This, in my opinion, is what is missing in most other instruction books on calligraphy.Other books I have and recommend by Eleanor Winters are " Calligraphy in Ten Easy Lessons" which is basic instruction on the Italic hand. And "Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy, A Step by Step Manual " In these books there are detailed instructions on stroke order and examples of correctly and incorrectly penned letters for each letter of the alphabet

Excellent book for going beyond the basics of copperplate and italic writing, with many different variations of styles. Adds so much personal style and character to calligraphy. Well written with very clear illustration, easy to follow. Highly recommend if one desires to go beyond the basics of calligraphy.

The photos of the product are a bit misleading. This is a BOOK only, no pens are included. My mistake assuming the photo of the pens meant they were a part of the order. The book has a picture of pens that will be needed.....pens need to be purchased separately

Of course notice who wrote it. More insights as an intermediate student in both italic and engrossers hand plus examples. It opened some doors for me to get past being stuck with just simple lettering and form I couldn't seem to get past. I believe this is going to help open a new vista for me but I'm just starting her recommendations. I've learned you don't get to see what your after until you've put the practice in and this art is practice, study, then practice more. I don't think anyone who wants to take italics or engrossers hand further could possibly be disappointed in this book.

Very comprehensive and easy to follow

I still use Eleanor Winter’s first manual on Copperplate and this builds on that one as well as dealing with Italic. Basics, variations, flourishes and layout in both hands..... it’s a really beautifully produced manual. At 228 pages crammed with diagrams and examples it is well worth the cost. Her books are first class!
