The tension on the spring seems very strong.I have looked at the instruction manual, and have removed the end Panal and screws but nothing happens?

If you remove the other end you will find it trying to rotate... have something in place to prevent it from rotating freely before you remove the last screw. Though it was easier than I ecpected, to hold it, with a stout flat headed screw driver.
