Permatex 82180 Ultra Black RTV Silicone Gasket Maker

I had an application where a wiring harness was thru-hole soldered directly to a circuit board. The circuit board is enclosed in a plastic housing but there is no strain relief to keep the wires from getting tugged and potentially being damaged. I decided to use RTV as a removable adhesive and potting compound that would act to adhere the wires and prevent breakage. I specifically wanted an automotive RTV in this application because they outgas very low levels of acetic acid as they cure. Other silicone compounds emit much higher levels of acetic acid and can etch or corrode circuits, etc. The automotive-type RTV compounds were specifically developed to be safe around easily contaminated components such as lambda sensors, hence the term "sensor safe" that still appears in the description. I've used Permatex RTV before in many of its different flavors, usually in automotive applications. It has worked well for me and this time was no exception. I had to snip the nozzle on the tube a couple of different times because the RTV is so viscous that it requires a relatively large opening to flow out. Once I was happy with the amount I was getting, it was a simple matter to fill each plastic housing with RTV. I did this on a Friday. By Monday morning, the RTV was cured and the wires were securely potted to the circuit board. The nice thing about using RTV is that I can still peel it off if I ever need to rework a circuit board, fix a wire, etc. All in all I fixed a dozen assemblies with this and used only a fraction of what's in the tube. I have a few more to fix so I'm glad I have some left over. For about $6, this was an effective and inexpensive solution.

Perfect for oil pans, used it to seal my mazda cx-5 trasnimission fluid pan. After 6 months, still no leaks or issues! It is durable and also easy to clean.
