Great! Amazing! Excellent!
All you Jazz Heads, like myself! I sing jazz and play alto saxophone!! Reading the history of Village Vanguard is amazing to hear the history. Mrs. Lorraine Gordon was courteous, fearless, and unapologetic a human being!

A piece of Jazz history...
After the death of Lorraine Gordon earlier this year, this book subsequently became a piece of Jazz history. She makes reference and recounts her personal encounters with a number of iconic Jazz musicians such as Ike Quebec, Thelonious Monk and so many others. An enjoyable and easy read for Jazz lovers.

A jazz fan could not imagine a better life than Gordon's
Lorraine Gordon was drawn to jazz at an early age, helping form a Hot Club in her hometown of Newark, NJ while still a teenager. She went on to marry Blue Note Records founder Alfred Lion in 1943, and worked alongside him for seven years before they divorced. Her second husband was Max Gordon, then the owner of both the Blue Angel and Village Vanguard nightclubs. Upon Max's death in 1989, Lorraine took over the daily running of the Vanguard, which she continues to do--now in a more limited capacity--to this day. This is the autobiography of a strong-willed wife, mother, activist, hard worker, and jazz lover and booster, who never let being a woman deter her from striving to reach certain goals and objectives. Frank, fascinating, and revealing, and told in an appealing conversational style, this book should be read in conjunction with Max Gordon's own 1982 autobiography, Live at the Village Vanguard.
