I was hesitant to pay $90 for this knife. Now that I have it and have used it for a while, it was well worth the price. The micarta handles are super rough. I like micarta and just kept figetting with it until the outer layer quit dropping fibers. Really good grip, great ergos. I’m lefty, so hadn’t bought a sheepdog until this version with reversible clip. The clip is really nice for what it is. The buttonlock has been great for me. Super smooth, no stick or grit (unlike their Kormorant, which is still nice in spite of that.) I don’t get sheepsfoot knives to stab and twist and pry with—so I have zero concerns about a buttonlock for regular use. I’m shocked at the blade coating. I expected it to scratch and streak up. I broke down a mountain of cardboard and cut some double-layer stuff with it and had to push hard (blade geometry is quite slicey—this was dual layer glued-together cardboard). Coating shows no signs of wear yet. I don’t care and expect to wear it off eventually, but I’m impressed for it holding up this well so far. The blade steel is pretty good. Not amazing edge retention, but good, and easy to sharpen on diamond stones. The sharpening work to edge retention feels fair to me. I get good use for the time spent sharpening. Takes a really good shaving edge freehand sharpening for me. I’m only okay free-hand, as in I can get D2 to shaving, but if it’s more carbide-heavy than that I usually need a guided sharpener to get shaving sharp. So—less retention than D2, but easier sharpening too. Feels eerily similar to their (Kizer’s) S35vn, which makes me wonder what we are actually paying for with that steel… All in all, this is one of those “more than the sum of its parts” knives. It doesn’t deserve to compete with knives 2-3 times its cost in my carry rotation—but it does. Everything came together to make a knife that’s decent materials, but very well done. It’s a joy to use and carry. If you were hesitant like me, I’d encourage you to get one. If your nervous about the button—their cross-bar lock version may interest you more.

I love it! I wouldn’t listen much to those that complain on weight. If you’re wearing jeans it’ll take up about a quarter real estate in your pocket. It’s thin and not too heavy. I even forgot it in my jeans once so you can forget it’s there. It feels reliable and the steel feels so good to use to cut things. I cut boxes everyday at work and home for product I receive everyday and this blade slices through cardboard like butter. Smaller knives can’t make it all the way through huge boards without me having to readjust. This long sheep’s blade is perfect for cutting through cardboard that’s over 2 feet long without readjusting. It’s like using a lightsaber or something. It’s only expensive because of the materials but you can get the same design for a lot less from Kizer. I might get another but I’ll always have this one with these materials. It’s brass but when I squeeze the handle with my hand very tightly, I feel no hard parts, no hot spots, even the clip is hardly noticeable and painless.

This thing is SHARP! Like, razor blade sharp. The micarta is pretty nice, I like the barn wood coloration. The bearings are very smooth and the blade swings easily. I did have to torque up the scales and pivot to remove any play, but once I did it's solid. The jimping is good, but the thumb hole could be sharper, I've found my thumb slipping out trying to deploy the blade but it's certainly manageable. The detent is weak, as in I can deploy the blade with an arm swing. Overall I am happy.

Kizer nails it, again. I've always liked the look of the Sheepdog but never pulled the trigger. I saw this was on sale so I finally decided to try it out. Now I see what all the hype has been about. This is a great knife! The fit and finish, feel of materials and sharpness are all impressive. The Clutch lock Sheepdog in 154CM punches way above it's price point. If I ever break it or lose it, I'll definitely buy it again. 👍

Woah! The action on this brass Kizer sheepdog is incredible. Here are a couple pics of it next to an XL version. The weight and button lock is perfect and the 3V steel was a great choice not going stainless so it patinas with the Brass. everything about this feels solid and I hope Kizer some day makes an XL version in exactly this style!!! If you are on the fence, dont be. This is the perfect knife that can only get better with age.

WOW ! I am over the moon impressed (and that takes some doing if you have read any of my snooty / picky reviews ) . I will update once I get some serious use on this knife, no really , but I just had to gush a bit on this first day of ownership . Not sure where to start but , in no particular order : The color ; I put off buying the purple anodized aluminum one (which this review is solely about) . I was concerned from some images that the color was going to lean too much toward red purple (red violet) than the more blue purple shown here on amazon . Some customer images are much more red. I am happy with the color . It is somewhat / a tiny bit more red than amazon images but then again when I look at it in different light it is more toward the blue violet . Back and forth over the day . The color is a significant portion of the reason I bought it . The "thin"ish blade is one reason I went ahead with my order. 2.8mm is an effective thickness for this 3 inch blade length (on first glance I just assumed it was going to be too thick ; on the order of 3.5 or 4 mm but I was super pleased to see I was wrong ! The edge . . . OH MY GOSH THE EDGE GEOMETRY IS SUPERIOR ! and quite sharp . Allow me to give a real world / practical example . My test for a "properly" ground (thin enough) and sharp enough edge is when I can trim one of my fingernails , in one piece , all the way across . This is the sort of edge I put on all my knives . The only edge that I recall coming from the factory this way was a CRK Sabenza 21 . . . and now, this Kizer Purple Sheepdog ! ! ! ! WELL DONE KIZER ! ! ! OK I got a go for now but : action perfect out of the box , no blemishes , edge sharp for the entire length including the tip with no rolls or dings , pocket clip did not require adjusting / not too tight . A STELLAR knife and I have only said that a hand full of times in about 600 reviews .

TLDR - Kizer absolutely killed it with this thing and if you are looking for a sub $250 big boy, in titanium, then this is easily your best option. It rivals other overbuilt titanium knives from much more expensive brands like PMP, Midgards Messer, Maxace, and even Medford, depending on your tastes. It is also in stock at the time of writing this, which often isn't the case with these chonker all metal knives. Aesthetics - this knife has the iconic look of the Sheepdog lineup and you'll probably either love it or hate it. It looks very stylish, like a modern take on something a viking might carry. According to the rep I talked to, it has a full black PVD coating. This is then stonewashed and you end up with a rugged finish that really compliments the already rough look. The golden hardware gives it some much needed color, which takes down the edginess of the big black knife and makes it look really nice. It is also nice that there are no skulls or other tacky symbols on the knife. The machining seems good; I can't find any visible flaws and the milled pocket clip is great to have. There are only two small aesthetic flaws - the removable flipper tab looks just a little bit weird, and as usual, kizer went a little overboard with the quantity of text on the blade. Action - everything about the action of this knife is just awesome. As you build up force on the flipper tab there is very little play. Then it breaks and flings the blade out, making a nice loud sound. When you close the knife, the frame lock has a very clean disengage and then the blade falls shut completely on its own. At this price, that is super impressive for a frame lock. When trying to open the knife with the thumb hole, it may seem impossible at first. But with practice (and somewhat strong hands) you can do it easily. You just have to keep your fingers completely off the lock bar so that you are not holding the detent in; I recommend moving your fingers down toward the end of the knife, next to the pocket clip. Ergonomics - coming in at 7.65 oz. this knife feels oddly light for its size. Its large round handle is comfortable to hold and the milled pocket clip has zero hot spots. In your pocket this knife is definitely noticeable, but it carries pretty well for its size. It is actually quite slim which is probably why it only weighs 7.65 oz. Similarly sized knives typically weigh 10-15 oz. Cutting - thanks to the super tall and not too thick blade, this knife slices pretty well. The jimping is super good; crazy grippy but not abrasive. The flipper tab is so big that you can use it like a finger choil, but do that at your own risk. You can also remove the tab altogether and have an actual finger choil. Maintenance - the pivot runs on bearings so you will have to clean it more often than you would a knife with washers. That said, it is extremely simple to take apart and put back together. All you will need is a t8 torx screwdriver, some blue (NOT RED) Loctite to keep the screws from vibrating loose after reassembly, and some pivot lube. Any pocket knife enthusiast should have these lying around, so if u don't have them already then go get em! I recommend buying your torx set from a good brand because cheap ones will strip your screws which is a massive pain in the behind. Your best option is a Wiha t8, which you can get for around $10, or if u plan on owning multiple knives then the 27 piece set from Wiha, with torx, flat head, phillips, and hex bits is a great hold-in-your-hand toolset that will cover all your knife stuff as well as most of your other screwdriver needs. Other knives to look at - the only other XXL titanium knife in this price range is the Artisan Proponent. In contrast to the Sheepdog, which is long, tall, but slim/lightweight for its size, the Proponent is half an inch shorter in length yet 3 oz heavier. It is just as tall but much thicker/chonkier. It's a pretty ugly knife, but that's part of it's charm. When I owned one I found its action to be mediocre compared to the Sheepdog. Due to the very thick blade it is nowhere near as slicy as the Sheepdog. The biggest drawback to the Proponent is its proprietary pivot screw. You basically cannot take it apart for cleaning and that should be a deal breaker for anyone who wants to actually use their knife instead of just put it on a shelf for display. I also had some corrosion issues with mine so needless to say I returned it. I really wanted to like the Proponent but I would 100% recommend anyone buy the Sheepdog instead. Conclusion - if you want a stupidly big Ti knife, then the Kizer XL Sheepdog in Ti is a great option at any price range. I love mine and I highly recommend it.
