Works really well!!!
Reading is my mom's favorite thing to do but she's go ARMD in her one good eye and her reading vision seems to get blurry more often these days. The doctor recommended she try to get as much light and magnification as possible on her reading material. She was already reading large print books and using a table top book stand, high intensity reading lamp over her shoulder, a handheld magnifying page, and a hand held magnifying glass. But they weren't enough.Using this new stand with its built in light has really helped. She was straining so hard to read and getting so frustrated and depressed before. She's so much happier now. It's removed a lot of the struggle to see the words clearly. We got her reading table and chair set up so her book stand, her reading lamp, and the new magnifying stand are all angled for optimal benefit, and she can now read quite easily without a lot of fuss/constant adjustments (as with the hand held magnifiers). The magnifying stand does have to be carefully adjusted so it's parallel to the page for best results (as other reviewers have mentioned), but that's easy with the book stand keeping the reading material steady and at a consistent angle. I also second the recommendation of others to cover the stand when not in use - if it's anywhere near a window and the sun might possibly hit it some time during the day, it does concentrate the light and I can see where it might create a fire hazard. Mom uses a pillow case to cover hers when not in use.The magnifier is a good size and she can see both pages of the book at once (or she slides the book stand side to side slightly if needed). I do wish it had a few more lights. I can see the day when the existing ones may not be bright enough to help enough. There was a similar stand on Amazon with more lights/greater illumination, but the size of the magnifier was a lot smaller. I opted for this one so she wouldn't have to constantly be moving the book or the magnifier for each page, which she was already doing with the hand helds. Hopefully someone will sell a lighted magnifying stand at least this size with greater illumination by the time mom needs it.

Good for reading or mostly stationary projects
The lamp and post are very lightweight and the base is very heavy which is nice so it won't tilt over very easily. Very easy to assemble. However, for the price, the magnifier seems to be a very cheap quality plastic. It's hard to clean the underside because of the circular ridges. I am liking it because it really helps with the cross stitch work that I do. I was using one of these small handheld magnifiers and was really cumbersome to hold and sew when trying to pinpoint a tiny area. So, it will do the work I bought it for, just disappointed that the price doesn't really match the quality of the magnifier material I was expecting...unless I was paying for the 'heavier' base :|Update:I loved how large the magnifier is, but, the power is only 3X which meant I had to have it really close to my work and because it had to be so close, it made it very difficult to sew. This magnifier would be perfect for reading or a mostly stationary project, not for handwork that uses a needle and thread.

Great gift she loved it.
It was all she wanted. She had seen it for more dollars in the little magazine. I was happy to find it here. She is not able to stop squinting and contorting to get in good light. The has great magnification and the lights are intense. Just be ware not to let sunlight shine through it as it will transmit heat and start a fire. Make a hood cover for it. Just the right height for a person in a recliner and not tippy.

Scratched and unstable
I recently purchased this product as a gift for my father-in-law, intending to provide him with a comfortable reading experience in his barrel chair. However, upon inspection, I discovered a significant scratch running down the center of the lens, which unfortunately impairs the clarity of the reading material. While the assembly process was straightforward, I must express concern regarding the stability of the product. Despite the substantial weight of the base, the overall structure feels rather unstable. Additionally, the "gooseneck" portion of the stand lacks flexibility in the middle, limiting the range of adjustment and making it challenging to position the lens optimally over one's lap.

Keep shopping.
I was super excited to get this lamp. I was looking for a magnifying lamp while I do cross stitch. I wanted a full size screen instead of wearing glasses on the end of my nose.1. The cord is too long. In trying to assemble (screw poles together), you must feed at least a foot or more of extra cord. Unfortunately there is no place in the base to pull the extra cord out of your way once poles are assembled. So must feed wires into tube while assembling.2. Once you have fought the cords while stuffing into tubes during assembly, dont think about moving it afterwards. Once you attempt to pick up the lamp to move it into its working location, the first pipe is not threaded into base, just slips in. You guessed it. It also just slips out of the base and pulling all the stuff cords back out.3. So assembly in place.
