Richly illustrated book, covers several styles and periods, organized in themes. Simply beautiful!

A well written and illustrated book. Photographs are of excellent quality. The book is large and square. The text is easy to read, not too technical. I really learned a lot.

John Oakley hat es in großartiger Weise verstanden, eine Einführung in die Welt der griechischen Vasen und ihrer Bilderwelten zu geben. Nachdem zunächst Herstellung, Form und Verwendung sowie Töpfer und Maler vorgestellt werden, widmet er sich den Bilderwelten und der Erzählsprache. Es handelt sich - mit wenigen Ausnahmen - um Vasen aus der Sammlung des British Museum in London, die mit Bedacht ausgewählt und in den jeweiligen Kontext im Buch eingebunden werden. Dabei liegt eine Stärke in der Reduktion auf wenige, an dieser Stelle wichtige Informationen.

I remember my junior year abroad (many decades ago) in Denmark walking in one of the art museums in Copenhagen and taking notes on the various styles of Greek vases. I've loved them ever since and finally decided to get a good general introduction. This is exactly the ticket: the who, what, where, when and styles of many Greek vases. Beautiful photos and a very informative text. Not too academic and not too long. Highly recommended!
