Great Bitesized Stories and Lessons!
Why this book: This book is beautifully illustrated and has retellings of stories themed around courage and kindness. The characters are diverse and the stories are fascinating. How I would use this book: I would use this book to teach character education if we had a theme of kindness or courageSummary: In the Prince and the Tower the prince has a wheelchair and is trapped in a tower. He is given a magic carpet and uses it to travel around the kingdom and eventually regains his throne. Unlike Rapunzel, his nanny is with him and they leave the tower when royal guards recognized his cousin lied and that he is not dead. In the Cuckoo clock, a girl moves and is all alone and goes on adventures with a magic cuckoo clock in her house. Eventually, she meets a boy and wants to teach him to read and the cuckoo clock leaves her saying he’s accomplished his mission. The cuckoo clock has a magic bird and the bird travels with her not the whole clock. In the Girl in the book, a girl is very bored and feels like she is uninteresting. Her sister decides to write her into one of her stories about pirates and adventure and she is happy - the first time the book is read. Quickly though, she grows tired of having to only say the words that are written for her and escapes the book learning to be content with her life. In Amelia and the elves, a girl is spoiled and has an awful character. She wastes food and purposefully makes messes. However, that all changes when she disobeys instructions and goes out into the field at night. There she is kidnapped by elves and has to make up for her wrongs by sewing the dresses she purposefully chores, fixing the china she broke, and eating the food she wasted. Eventually, she escapes having changed her character for the better. In the princess and the goblins, a girl has a magic thread from her fairy godmother she goes exploring at night and meets a poor boy who later helps her on her journey. Together they learn that the goblins are trying to take over the kingdom when the boy is captured. The princess helps him escape and together they save the kingdom. In the Water Babies, a boy learns the importance of treating others how he would like to be treated when he is rescued from being a chimney-sweeper by becoming a water baby but is greedy and unkind. Lastly, in the Ruby Ring, a girl learns to be content and herself after she uses her magic ring to transform herself into the wood people, a bird, and, a fairy.Reaction: This book was such a fun read and the stories were great too! I liked how there were both boys and girls represented in the fairytales and the lessons they contained relating to courage and kindness. I also liked how the first story featured a boy in a wheelchair without that being an integral part of the story.

Boring Stories
I do not recommend purchasing this book. The stories are overly preachy and boring.

A lovely collection of stories
It was great to find a new collection of fairy stories for slightly older children that can be read at bedtime. My 6 year old did find one of the stories slightly scary but has really enjoyed listening to a few each night. The illustrations make it a lovely gift.

Excellent book for different ages - highly recommend
8 year old (who happily reads Harry Potter) says it’s excellent and really likes the stories, and 6 year old (who tries to avoid reading anything) read part of a story to me at bedtime today. Not sure it could get higher praise.

Lot of death
My niece is enjoying them but there’s an awful lot where the parents die and I’m starting to reconsider the book
