Read the Small Print and Use Better Gloves!!!
Ok.... this was the first time that I've ever used any Knight & Wilson product but I liked the claims made for this "Colour-Freedom Gloss Pro 150ml Truly Blue Semi-Permanent Hair Colour" (which seemed to be backed up by many reviews) that this wouldn't irritate my scalp (which can be very sensitive) or trash my already fragile hair. It didn't on either count. :) A little background about my hair, first: I'm 52 years old and have been colouring my hair for donkey's years. In it's most recent form it had previously been bleached (highlights), in Nov 2022, when it was a lot shorter but had been growing out with lots of my salt & pepper warm brown hair regrowth showing at the roots. Ongoing health problems mean I can't get to the hairdressers too frequently so I put a box colour over the regrowth and bleached highlights to blend them back in more to my more natural warm brown colour. I used a "Schwarzkopf Oleo Intense Permanent Burgundy Red 4-23" for that cover up back in May 2023 (which holds well for about 5-6 weeks then starts to fade out) and over the last 3 months I've been spending a lot of time out in the garden (when the sun has been out) so that colour was starting to fade and lighten (as I had anticipated). I fancied something different this time (I have a blue and black tattoo) and thought blue would be a real change from my usual warmer reddish tones of brown but I wasn't sure if I would really like it or if it would suit my skin tone so wanted a colour that wouldn't stay put for too long. As mentioned, I read a LOT of reviews for a LOT of different brands and colours but eventually opted for this, the "Colour-Freedom Gloss Pro 150ml Truly Blue Semi-Permanent Hair Colour" by Butler & Wilson. I had also read the small print and looked on various other websites to get a good gauge of the sort of result I might expect. To be honest I was expecting a much darker blue tone but I quite like the brighter shade that it ended up - it's different, and quirky, just like me! ;) So, what have I learned.... 1) Make sure you do a patch test, well in advance. Most of us who have used multiple hair dyes over the years don't do this but because this dye was new to me, I did on this occasion and because the product is all mixed and ready to go in the tube it was easy to do by dabbing a bit behind my ear with a cotton bud. Thankfully, my usually sensitive skin didn't react at all (a real bonus for me - I sometimes react to certain shampoos and styling products so I knew I was taking a punt!) 2) If you can, get yourself some snug fitting nitrile gloves and use one pair to apply and another pair to rinse. The plastic gloves that come with these home dye kits are pathetic and this stuff will dye your hands blue if you inadvertantly put a finger nail through the gloves, or get blue water down inside the glove while rinsing - like I did. 3) Use vaseline as a barrier around your face where it meets your hairline. Don't forget to coat your ears and the back of your neck as best as you can too (or get a happy helper to assist you). I've never done this before but it made a huge difference and I didn't get any staining around my face at all. Good tip for future reference for me too! 4) Rinse, rinse and rinse again. This Colour-Freedom Gloss Pro 150ml Truly Blue Semi-Permanent Hair Colour ran clear fairly quickly (unlike some other dyes I've used which seem to take forever) but I am still getting colour staining on my hands when I run my fingers through my hair now it's dry (same day - I'll see how it goes after it's had a good wash). So, as to my "finished article". This dye clearly will not dye natural roots (as I'd read somewhere so I wasn't too shocked - but that's something to bear in mind if you are hoping to cover natural growth). It doesn't really cover greys either. It has given a messy blue ombre look which I don't mind at all - but it might not be to other users own personal preferences. After this 'blue rinse' (haha!), my hair feels good, with no further damage or breakage and the product smells inoffensive too - all plus points in my book! This Colour-Freedom Gloss Pro 150ml Truly Blue Semi-Permanent Hair Colour clearly works and if you've got previously highlighted or bleached hair, or used a pre-lightener beforehand then I'm sure the colour outcome would be lovely!!! For the range of selling points (gentle on hair, good colour, great price point, ease of application etc) this stuff is really rather good and I'd recommend it to anyone who is thinking of, even on a temporary basis, having a bit of an alternative barnet for a while! ;) When this has washed out I'm going to try a Knight & Wilson permanent colour closer to my natural warm brown shade again - I wonder how that will go?! :)

Good results
I used storm grey... And indigo I've been toning my hair silver grey for some time, which is incredibly difficult to maintain, and all the bleaching damages your hair, but it's necessary to obtain silver hair. This product gave me the results that a toner (which is mixed with peroxide/more damage). Does, but left my hair very soft? Very manageable and looking very healthy. As you shampoo (USE COOL WATER, hot water rinses away colour faster) the colour fades to a light silver then eventually back to blonde, But my toner used to start washing out from the first wash also. I will now use this product instead of my toner, I have seen a massive difference in the health of my hair. This colour looks very dark while processing. Do not rinse until the full-time. Rinsing any sooner will have less colour effect. I left this product on my hair covered with a shower cap for thirty minutes applied to dry hair, shampoo only no conditioner. I have included a before and after photo, I still had some warm tones but the over all look was grey, highly recommended. And smells gorgeous like parma violets. 1 tube did my hair twice. I have chin length bob. Indigo.... Got bored with silver so went for purple, results where good, but different colours in different light. Looks purple in daylight, but had blue hues, looks very blue in house lights, I feel the purple will wash away very fast and leave blue. Not washed yet, but will update... Over all I'm happy with the colours these dyes provide for a semi. Nice and vibrant. And gentle on hair

Great for adding warmth back to ashy / white lengths
I have naturally level 7 blonde hair and a side effect of regular toning on a level 9 or 10 lift is that the ends end up pure white quite quickly. This is a great product for adding some subtle warmth back, and will also neutralise lilac / grey tones if they stray into your colour-perfect lengths. The gloss effect is very subtle, if noticeable at all, but the colour pay off is decent for such a cheap product! Will be using it once a week to maintain warmth through my lengths. 🖤

Great for restore, not colour on bleached hair
I have just bleached my hair so have brassy roots and ends, the typical bleached from copper red hair kinda look. This did not deposit a single amount of colour, BUT, it did wonders for restoring my hair during the bleach episodes. So that being said 0/5 for colour for my situation, and 5/5 for the condition it has lifted my hair too.

Only a very slight beige tone
This does leave your hair beautifully conditioned and soft, but doesn’t tone the hair much in the medium blonde. I’m peroxide blonde and needed a tone darker and thought this would take a lot darker, but it just put a very slight beige tone in my hair and nobody noticed. I think I will go for the dark blonde next time, but if you want just a slight tone to your bleached blonde hair then this is a very natural tone and perfect for it.

Didn’t take to my lightened hair
Sadly this didn’t take to my hair at all. Left it on a little longer than the 20 mins stipulated and my hair is bleached so it absolutely should have taken. My hair did feel lovely and conditioned afterward. But no colour and would make for an expensive hair mask. Such a shame as I love the ethos behind it.
