There's a clear plastic piece over the metal strip. You slide the paper under the plastic so that it butts up against the top edge 2 create a straight cut. There's a ridge formed in that clear plastic that is a 1/4 inch guide. **Q: can you purchase a replacement cutting blade** A: Haven't used it enough to need to find out.
