Does this use standard T18 tips, if not what kind of tips does it use?

I have this soldering iron and I use genuine Hakko T18 tips also. The only difference between 900M and T18 tips is the overall width of the shank. T18 shanks are roughly 1.5 to 3 tenths of a mm wider, it depends on how much undersize the cheap tips are when you compare them. The 4mm hole on the cheap tips aren't all drilled to the same depth, so some will sit directly on the steel shaft that protrudes from the handle of the iron and surrounds the ceramic heater and some do not, leaving a small gap between the shank of the tip and the steel shaft. The Hakko tips leave a very small gap and sit directly on the tip of the ceramic heater, so don't over tighten the steel sleeve that holds the tip in place. Even when there's a gap with the cheaper tips you should not overtighten the sleeve, you risk breaking the ceramic heater. Just firmly finger tighten. What do I need to pay attention to to maintain soldering iron?

If the tip is too severely oxidized beyond cleaning, replace it with a new one.
