Product Description In this moving CD tribute to his father entitled Passionata (also available as an MP3 download), the dazzling pianist Kenny Drew Jr. plays songs his father wrote, songs his father loved and, in the title track, performs a piece that his father began to compose and which he, Kenny Drew Jr., completed after his father's death. A member of the Mingus Big Band and a regular player alongside Stanley Turrentine, Drew displays the same brilliance with Passionata, his 11th release as a leader. The album is pure Jazz classicism. Homage is its guiding principle, and reverie abounds. The pianist, a heroic modern rhapsodist, leads a deeply melodic, rhythmically sublime trio (supplemented by a string orchestra) through the perfumed night air and mid-tempo grooves composed or favored by his late father Kenny Drew, the Bebop pianist who helped make that style today s common Jazz language. Along with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash, and featuring Bob Belden s string arrangements on 4 songs, Kenny Drew, Jr. s Passionata is a fitting tribute to a Jazz great, as well as an example of the depth and passion of Jazz music. Drew Sr.'s muted lyricism his "dark beauty" as well as his witty, lighter moments are faithfully conveyed in his son's unhurried approach and detailed statements, his long-unfurling, precisely weighted lines and well-structured movements that nestle here and there in sinuous string charts by Bob Belden. Belden selected and conducted the ensemble of New York "downtown" musicians whose professional experience with edgy pop, jazz and new music results here in a seductive section blend and supple phrasing. Still, Passionata belongs to Drew the Younger. His mastery and maturity are ever in the fore. He's been featured in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Mingus Big Band, in combos with Stanley Turrentine, Steve Turre and Charnett Moffett, and this is, 39-year-old Kenny Drew Jr.'s 11th recorded album as a leader. Totally enjoyable music
Kenny Drew Jr. was a pianist with amazing talent. I bought this CD because I have several CDs by his father and just thought I would take a chance. My goodness! The pianism and the overall music is beautiful! He uses the whole piano and his chording is so rich. Some jazzists don't like orchestral additions to their jazz, but the cuts (4) using orchestration were done very well and not overbearing. Not long after buying the CD, I heard that he had passed. Another great jazz person gone and underappreciated. Buy the CD. You will love it! BTW his dads music(Kenny Drew) is something to behold also.

When You Wish Upon A Star(星に願いを)の演奏は、他のジャズメンの演奏をいろいろ聴いて来ましたが、このテイクが一番好きです。
