i first encountered these at rest stops on the NJ Turnpike in 1968; Back then, they had a nice,real coffee flavor. They were invaluable for keeping me alert on long drives. For quite some time now, they've had a nondescript, vaguely chemical taste. But they still do the job. They pack 75 mg of caffeine, about the same as a (not-too-strong) cup of coffee, but it seems to get into the bloodstream much more rapidly than the caffeine in a cup of coffee. They're also handier. You can keep some in your glove compartment (but not on hot days) or in your pocket. Like everything else, their price has gone up. While it still tasted like coffee, I preferred the "classic" coffee flavor. Now I find the Mocha Mint flavor the most pleasant.

I don't drive professionally, but I've driven 500-1,300 mile trips a dozen or so times. When I was a lot younger, I used to just suck it up and stayed on the highway no matter how tired I got. Then I realized that going 80 mph with one eye closed and desperately wanting to close the other eye was just stupid. That was when I decided to stop and get a rest before continuing. Then one day I came across these in one of those rest area convenience shops. The next time I was tired while driving, I popped 2 of these in my mouth, and within about 2 minutes my eyes snapped wide open and I felt totally awake. This feeling of total alertness lasted for over 3 hours. more than long enough to get me safely and comfortably to where I was headed. These days, it seems that everyone gets either Red Bull or 5-hour Energy to get that boost. However, these old Energets have never failed me. They are convenient to keep in my glove box, and if I ever feel tired, these instantly get me back to being alert and safe. I don't know what else you can ask for. They don't taste bad, but they are not tasty either. Basically, they work.
