Good book, but could be better
The book starts off interestingly with an overview of the famous Mauve Boudoir and the restoration work that went on, but that is when the trouble starts. Rather than work through the years chronologically so we get a sense of how the family grew, the people who came and went, the war and final years and then the restoration, the pictures are assembled in no order so one moment we see young Olga and Tatiana, then it's a group picture of nurses, then more young children, then teenage Grand Duchesses. The other issue is that the pictures are not high quality, and look to have been printed out on paper found in an office printer and photocopied to make a book.

A good book poorly presented
A photocopy of the original version which was not up to the standards I expect from Amazon. Received in good condition but sadly not on time. I was doubly surprised by these facts.

Great book by an accomplished researcher and author
Paul Gilbert, the author of this book and other books has dedicated his life to preserving the history of the last generations of the Romanov family. I am an avid reader of his bi-weekly email newsletters and view him as my primary expert on these fascinating public figures. I have read many books on the Romanovs and especially like this one. The collection of numerous photos and captions provide an intimate view of the Romanov family that I haven't previously experienced.I look forward to also reading Gilbert's companion book, "The Empress's Balcony". These books help maintain my fond memories of visiting the Alexander Palace .
