Heartbreaking and beautiful
MS Lane has taken historical facts and turned them into a heart-breaking and heart-felt story of determination, strength and courage as we learn about the midwife, Emilia in Auschwitz who with the help of Aleksy and Lena saved hundreds of lives, make sure you have a box of tissues while reading. In 1995 the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, there is a call fall for any information on the midwife who saved so many lives, Emilia knows it is time to tell her story. When Emilia is taken prisoner in 1942 in her homeland of Poland she is sent to Auschwitz for helping Jewish mothers deliver their babies and working for The Resistance, what she discovers here is atrocious and appalling, but it makes Emilia determined to help as many as she can as a midwife. When she meets Aleksy a Polish doctor and Obstetrician they join forces to work together and then young Lena steps in to help as well and soon they are saving babies and woman at such danger to themselves.I cried bucket loads in this one, it is beautifully written and a must read story for any lovers of historical fiction, I do highly recommend this one.

Beautiful and tragic
What a hauntingly beautiful story. This book has changed my perspective, I hold my babies tighter and treasure every moment I get to watch them live and smile. My heart breaks for the tragedy that this book is based on, but I'm also in awe of the bravery of the characters in the face of so much evil. This book was hard to read, emotionally, but absolutely necessary.

A different perspective of the concentration camp, Auschwitz, the demands reading!
Shelia was a midwife and her fault to becoming a prisoner was that she was helping!!!! Captured after being turned in by someone in her village, she became a prisoner in Auschwitz. There she met a wonderful man, Alesky, who was a doctor. Just the perspective of a midwife and doctor in this camp is so so sad, brutal, and disturbing. A must read!

Wonderful book!
This was a good book about the people who were able to survive the camp of horror named Aushwitz. This was a true story of the midwife who took care of pregnant women in the most horrible circumstances. It was a story of true courage in horrendous times!

A well written book!
This was written well. I think this story needs told whether it's fictional or fact. Young people need to realize what happened during this time in history! I've read several books having to do with WW2. Some are more eye openers than others! This one did a fine job.

The Secret Midwife
This story feels the most real to me of any I've read about this time in history. Thank you to the author and I would highly recommend it to all that are interested in this kind of historical story.

Compelling and moving historical fiction
I was given access to this book before publication thanks to Net Galley. I am especially drawn to stories set during WW2, and I love books about midwives too. Emilia is a Polish woman who is sent to Auschwitz for helping to deliver and smuggle Jewish babies to safety. Once there, she continues working as a midwife while also secretly saving hundreds of babies and their mothers, along with the help of a prisoner doctor Aleksy. Together, they put secret hidden tattoos on the non-Jewish babies so that they may one day be able to reunite with their mothers after being given to Nazi families. Emilia is finally ready to tell the story she’s kept to herself on the 50th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation. I became completely immersed in this story immediately. It’s definitely a heavy book and many parts were difficult and emotional to read, but the characters’ bravery was inspiring (and they were based on real people). A very compelling, heartbreaking, moving, and ultimately hopeful read.

Compelling!
This book is riveting from first page to last. The characters are genuine. The story is heartbreaking in all of its detail. I recommend 'The Secret Midwife' to anyone who is interested in the holocaust and has the desire to ensure that such a thing can never be repeated.

A Moving Story
This is a painful reminder of the brutality of Nazis.it is extremely difficult to believe that this could happen and yet it is true.We can only hope that mankind has learnt its lessons and this will not be repeated again.

Good read
Sit down with a hot cup of tea and the book you hate to put down, that’s my idea of a good way to spent my free afternoon from work.Good, but emotive book, with plenty of characters to keep your interest and mind engrossed with the plots and twists.Enjoyed the authors sympathetic writing and creative empathy for the characters heart felt experiences during this horrendous war.
