I was interested in the Crown Colony of Aden, and it is now 50 years since the British left once and for all. There are quite a few factual books about that time but this is the only fictional account. Each time I put the book down, I wanted to get back to its heat, sand, insurgence, army, cruise liners, expats, bombs, Adeni fishermen, sharks, revolution. It is about dangerous times, struggle and privilege, order and chaos, and through it all there's a subtle strand of sexiness. And to add to all that, it's very well written in my opinion.
