The Original Lava® Lamp - 14.5" Aurora Borealis – Classic Liquid Motion Lamp - Purple Wax and Blue Liquid - Item #2047 (Amazon Exclusive)

I wrote up a very long detailed review which addressed pretty much every common issue that other reviews had, but Amazon rejected it. So here's the short version. I've got about 60 hours on this lamp and so far it works great. My glass is not damaged, the lamp doesn't appear to be used, the wax rises and falls properly, it hasn't exploded, etc. It just works perfectly and the color is gorgeous. The only problem I had is that the bulb that it shipped with only lasted 3 hours. Some people have recommended replacing it with a 35 or 40 watt bulb, but I would not recommend that. I replaced it with another 25 watt bulb and the wax cycles perfectly. I think a hotter bulb would just make the wax overheat and clump up at the top of the bottle. Either way, make sure you have some spare bulbs when you order this.

Ah, the original lava lamp! The original and the best. This particular unit is known as Aurora Borealis and at first I thought that was referencing the base of the unit because it is colored differently than I've seen before, kind of a swirl pattern. The magic however is what happens in a dark room when the lava lamp is operational. This particular combination of fluid color and "lava" color produces effects on the walls that mimic the Aurora Borealis. Very interesting looking lava as it seems to change color somewhat and by doing that it shoots bright beams if you will of green color onto the walls in an ever-changing pattern just like the Aurora. I've always loved lava lamps but this particular combination of fluid and wax offers a truly hypnotic effect in a dark room. To truly enjoy the effect to its fullest the room must be absolutely dark. Place the lamp about 6 in from the wall to enhance the effect. This one will not disappoint!

I have wanted a lava lamp since the 1970s when my aunt had one and I watched it all day and night, This is by far the coolest one I have ever seen. The price was what always kept me from getting one. BUT I had a gift card so I treated myself. #1 amazon delivery person THREW it or DROPPED it right over my fence and left it on the concrete by my gate of my busy street. Um the porch with a hidden railing is 6 feet from an old fashioned easy to open gate! I mean come on ppl. I got it in excited and hoped it wasnt broken. THee coil was upside down. omg. it would not flip over and i gently tried according to the internet search to tip it ever so slightly to the side very little. NOPE not wanting to damage it or mess up my flow i put in bulb and plugged it in. SHORTED OUT right away. I tried to screw bulb in a bit more, then fiddled with the on of toggle then it worked, however it shorted out again about 1 hour later and the lava never properly flowed. It is too beautiful with the exact lava colors I have only dreamed of So i returned and reordered,. UPS did not want to return it without a box even though they did not ship in any amazon packaging as i requested. so that was a bit of a hassle. Girl was cool about tho and an old lady gave me her used box. New one came in perfect delivery sill not in amazon packaging as i requested , came in just the box its in again. So I take it out excited that this is going to be the one. .. The lava and coil were upside down again. Following the tutorials again, I managed ever so gently to persuade it to flip on its own. I is day 2 or 3 and its going well. I have had it on twice letting it settle over night. Lava is a bit murky still but I can live with it!

Would buy again and again... HOWEVER, (BUYER BEWARE) it is overall much darker than expected. The liquid is more of a turquoise/aquamarine shade which can seem murky with the light off. The wax in mine is a lighter shade of purple than in the image. As the liquid in the lamp thins and flows it bubbles into shades of purple, pink and even some green down near the light. I honestly do love it and I feel (in my opinion) that the colors remind ME of the colors of the northern lights and not overly fake bright color. I actually sat on this review for several weeks before typing it out. Honestly, I was initially disappointed as it didn't "look" like the photo. Tried the whole clearing up process without achieving the "photo look". So I sat and watched it every night and actually realized that I appreciate it more for the color it IS and how closely (in my opinion) looks like the actual muted colors of the aurora.

This is a replacement. This is what I ordered. The clarity is what I paid for. Very Satisfied!

My first lava lamp came in! But it’s foggy and not clear like the picture showed. It does work really well, but you can blearily see it. I’ll update this review when the new lava lamp arrives. More things are, It looks really nice, and works how it’s supposed to. It’s fairly (Not exactly) priced when it comes to gifting to other people as long as it is not foggy. It’s really hot when it is on, but I would recommend being careful where you put it as it could fall and break. It works as a perfect night light because on how bright it is and simple (not too easy and not really hard) to find a comfortable place to put it. It’s really calm, comfortable and relaxing and I’m proud to say it would be one of the best things I got to spend with my Amazon gift card. (I’m using the one in the video as a night-light then I’ll return it tomorrow.)

This should not be sold in the UK - it is for the wrong voltage and has an American plug on it. Very annoying - I nwe have to go through all the palava of returning it.

Foggy but lovely. Someone else had posted a review with their lamp and they mentioned the foggy appearance of the liquid that the wax floats in. Mine is the same, you cant see through to the other side, however I still really enjoy the lamp. The colour is gorgeous and I find such a difference between this one and a cheaper no name version I had. My lamp arrived in perfect condition and has been having daily use and very happy.

​I was so excited to add this lava lamp to my room, but opening the package was a nightmare. The box arrived completely crushed, and I could immediately hear the sound of glass rattling around inside. ​When I opened it up, the base and light bulb were fine, but the actual glass globe was shattered into a million pieces. The entire inside of the box was a soaking wet mess of liquid, shards, and wax. ​To make matters worse, as I was trying to pull the components out, I got a severe cut on my hand from a shard of glass that was stuck to the inner cardboard. This isn't just a broken product; it's a safety hazard. Zero stars if I could.
