One of the best books I have read in a long time.
I could not put this wonderful book down. I am a fan of war time fiction but this book had me in tears. Not the usual story of women left at home to earn a crust, keep rent man at bay and wait for the unwelcome news from the war dept. This was also NOT a story of a woman who is accidentally brushed on the arm by a stranger and she takes great offence yet two minutes later she is recalling his oh so blue eyes and two months later they are wed. This was a story of courage and determination by a woman who was very confident in herself. It was also filled with historical detail, as sad and gruesome as it was. Ms Wood brought the war to life. As I read I could feel the struggle that our brave men and women endured. It also brought the Battle of Passchendaele , where my granddad was killed, to life. My granddad was one of many victims who was only identified by his dog tags. Nothing else remained. Thank you Ms. Wood for such a wonderful book and allowing me a better view into the horrors of the War to end all wars.

Very enjoyable
The war information of how the injured was treated by nurses and doctors was very heart warming. Description of events was believable,

Loved it
A beautiful story indeed. For those who lived through WW1 and fought too on the battlefields we must never forget them. For others who fought alongside those brave men, in the field hospitals we must never forget them also. Dealing with the carnage of lost lives and limbs, disease and suffering was hard indeed. Being a woman Dr. working in these battlefield stations was even harder with the prejudices of the time. Brave people, all of them. No Place for a Woman is well written and with a heartfelt personal tale for Lucy growing into a beautiful, talented Doctor, wife and mother to finally come full circle with her very own family beside her. Loved it.

Beautiful WW1 story
This story was a very good feel drama, about a tragic start to a little girl aged 4 and her life, as she grows up . The characters in the story are wonderful and everyone would love to have friends like these. Although the stories from the battlefield of WW1 are harrowing l discovered a lot about things l didn’t know that had happened. I am very pleased l came across the book and would recommend it as a throughly good read.

Another wonderful story.
Another wonderful story from this great author. After reading her very first book I was hooked; now I am working my way through every book she has written and each one is just as exciting as the previous one. I just love the way she brings her characters to life, and you feel as though you know each one of them, and live through their experiences. I cannot wait to start the next one!

Slow burner
I'm a huge fan of Val Woods. This to me was a book in three parts. The first and thrid were too long and the middle too short.I almost gave up a few chapters in as it was very slow and nothing seemed to be happening. The middle part set in the midst of WWI was beautifully written and gave a detailed picture of the trenches and those who picked up the pieces. The third part after the war was tying up a few ends but needed to be shorter.

Interesting book about life in Hull in the early 20th century
I am from Hull so I enjoyed reading this and also noted a page where some soldiers stopped to have their bayonets sharpened in the first World War period at my grandfather's Tool business, T S Kaye& Sons, in Hull, which I have also written a book about myself. Reading about Pearson Park and other places in Hull, brought back memories of growing up there. The part about the war was also fascinating and what happened to Hull at that time, as well as how soldiers were treated in army hospitals in France.
