I have a kf1r. whats the model to use that will fit the back plate. i also assume that the connectors are the same.

The KF1R is the 2nd generation and discontinued by the manufacturer. The compatible replacement for this is the KF10R. The KF10, KF10LL, KF10R, KF20, KF20LL, KF20R, KF30, KF30LL and KF30R all come with a mounting plate so can also be used as a replacement.

I have at the moment 2 kidde firex kf2 4973 fitted and one appears to be faulty. is this unit compatible as a replacement

As far as I can tell the KF20 is a direct replacement for the 4973, see this quote from an online seller :- " The Kidde KF20 / 4973 is a 230V Optical Smoke Detector with Alkaline Battery Back Up from the Kidde Firex range." The mains connector blocks look exactly the same. Hope that helps.
