Can the entrance be placed on either side?

Not sure...all the parts to the litter box is labeled A-H and is step by step per the building instructions. I guess you could switch them.

Is it possible to put the opening on the left side instead of the right?

Yes, you can put the opening on either side when putting it together.

It's very sturdy but very heavy. You could not install the edge trim on the top for a perfectly flat surface, and I expect you could put significant weight on their. You wouldn't want another one of these units on top unless the cats had a ramp of some kind to get to the upper door.

Can the opening be on the left side vs right?

The way that it is cut only allows for the one side
