Modern Ruin

I have been a Covenant fan for quite some time (along with all the other offerings by Metropolis). I was excited to see a new offering of tracks from them and put in my pre-order. I will not say that I am disappointed in the new album, but I cannot gush about how great it is either. Don't get me wrong, this IS a good album and perhaps with additional listening sessions it will grow on me more. However, I don't think that it compares with some of their previous efforts. It sounds to me like they are trying to branch out and extend their sound into different areas. To me, it they are not quite there yet. I understand the need to grow and change as a band, but I sure did love the old sound. I would still recommend this effort.

It's been a while since Covenant release something and this did not live up to the hype. Pretty much picks up where Skyshaper left off and that's ok but they have really gotten slower and more pop over time. Gone are the filtered distortion noises that looped in the background of their older material, which created an interesting textured backdrop to a otherwise synth pop sound. Lightbringer is the best song on this, they use a wicked bass/pad patch throughout the song and the rest are good but there seems to be an overall lack of energy throughout, like they are just going through the motions, which is strange since it's been 5 years since Skyshaper. This could also be a result of Daniel Myer (formally of Haujobb - which frankly never did anything for me) being a permanent member of the band. Who knows this could be just a kick the dust off release and their future releases will back up to 4 - 5 star range.

I've been a HUGE Covenant fan for the last five albums, but with this one they have fallen from great heights. Of course, all albums have some major hits and a few misses, but this one is mostly misses IMO.I put off buying this album since it came out because I heard a few track on YouTube and was so un-impressed. I finally bought it hoping that maybe listening to the album in its entirety, it would make sense. It doesn't.Lightbringer could be a good song, but it's far too poppy for my taste. Beat the Noise has a great beat, but the lyrics are repetitive and boring. Judge of My Domain is a great song. That's the only one off of this album I have any desire to listen to.If you like "soundscapes" and artsy music and the like, you will enjoy this album. I like profound lyrics, moving beats and music with a purpose, so I didn't care for this album one bit.

This is the best Covenant album ever. I can't stop listening to it. Lightbringer is a great song and sets the tone for a brilliant set of tunes that are more vibrant and progressive than any of their albums. They do something other bands in this genre fail to do--they keep getting better and are not interested in simply stepping back into that stock 90s sound their fan base seems to be stuck in. This is a top ten album of the year.

Covenant used to sound fresh and always managed to bring an aural surprise or two on their albums. Modern Ruin doesn't. It is OK for die hard fans - but they will not get any new ones with this outing...Claes is definitely missing.

That would be my expectations were too high. Be your own judge if you're a fan of electronic enhanced music .

Covenant's latest release, "Modern Ruin" opens with 1:28s of a blaring Klaxon and a heavily processed voice; I can't make out what its saying, but I wouldn't be surprised if its, 'WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO HEAR THE BEST EBM ALBUM OF THE LAST 12 YEARS.'With this album, Covenant have reinvented, reinvigorated, upgraded and generally improved their sound. The addition of Haujobb's Daniel Myer to the line-up has injected an abrasive but compulsively danceable element which has made them harder and yet strangely more accessible.The EBM scene which spawned them died a sad, ignoble death in about 2004: the victim of too much formulaic music, too many fevered egos and too few decent releases; but Covenant have gone on to transcend its ruin and leave what negligible competition still exists standing in the dust with this release. If you already know them, I suspect that you'll love this. And if you've never heard them, this album is an excellent place to start.

Geschenk kam sehr gut zum Geburtstag an. Die Gruppe Covenant ist eh der Renner in der Musik. Zumindest von uns.

Ich weiß jetzt gar nicht was ich groß dazu schreiben soll.Es ist wie immer ein sehr gutes Album geworden, auch wenn einige Titel fehlen die ich mir noch gewünscht hätte.Wo sind "If i would give my soul", "Come" und " I close my eyes"???? Ich hatte mich schon riesig auf die Songs gefreut.Covenant entwickelt sich weiter und das ist auch gut so. Dennoch bleiben sie sich selbst und ihrer Musik treu.Ich gehe zu jedem Konzert das sie in der Nähe geben. Ich hoffe sie machen noch lange so weiter.Für jeden Covenant Fan ein MUST HAVE, für jeden anderen der diese Musikrichtung hört sicher eine Bereicherung seiner Sammlung!!Die einzelnen Lieder hier zu bewerten finde ich persönlich nicht sinnvoll. Jeder sollte sich selbst zuerst seine Meinung drüber bilden.MFG

Nachdem ich mir das neue Album nun mehrfach angehört habe und immer besser finde, möchte ich nun auch noch meinen Senf hier dazu geben.Das neue Album klingt typisch nach Covenant und doch irgendwie anders. Was sicher auch daran liegt, dass mit Daniel Myer ein Electro-Spezialist der Sonderklasse dazu kam. Kein Song auf "Modern Ruin" gleicht dem anderen, jeder hat seine ganz eigenen Momente und seinen eigenen Charakter. Das macht das Album auf die Dauer unwiderstehlich, verstört aber anfangs und schreckt fast ab...Aber nun zu den einzelnen Songs: Nach dem Intro erklingt zunächst "Lightbringer", der Song, der schon vorab als Single ausgekoppelt wurde. Auch wenn mir manch andere Version auf der EP fast besser gefallen hat, passt die Version hier ganz gut. Das folgende "Judge Of My Domain" legt an Tempo zu und hat einen klassischen Refrain zu bieten, bei dem Eskils warme, dunkle Stimme perfekt zur Geltung kommt. Danach kommt das technoide "Dynamo Clock" und im Anschluss mit einminütiger Überleitung ("Kairo") der kleine Höhepunkt "The Beauty And The Grace" mit dezentem Wave-Einschlag und Gitarrenklängen. "Get On" wirkt anschließend mit seinem versetzten Beat und den 70er-Jahre Synthies leicht schräg, entwickelt sich aber schnell zum Ohrwurm, während des kühle, dunkle "Worlds Collide" vor allem mit seiner Atmosphäre punktet. "In The Night" ist ein seltsamer, spaciger Song und die wohl ungewöhnlichste Komposition auf "Modern Ruin". Im Gegensatz zum dramatisch intonierten "Beat The Noise", welches sich wohl als nächste Single-Auskopplung anbietet. Zum Abschluss dann das trancig-hypnotische "The Road" als sanfter Ausklang des Albums. Insgesamt wirkt das Album dadurch als großes Ganzes und man möchte sofort wieder die Play-Taste drücken :-)Absolute Kaufempfehlung!!

Irgendwie traut man sich ja vor lauter mittelmäßiger bis schlechter Kommentare kaum noch zu Wort .....Ich hab mir die neue Scheibe ganz vorsichtig zu Gemüte geführt - und siehe da: ich finde sie klasse ! OK, es gibt Ausrutscher (v.a. In the night - verzerrter Gesang und ein Beat - das braucht echt niemand).Ansonsten ist die Scheibe jedoch richtig gut. Ich messe das einfach an meinem Druck auf die Wiederholen-Taste - ich kann gar nicht mehr zählen, wie oft ich The Beauty and the Grace und Judge of my Domain schon gehört habe. Gleichsam ziemlich häufig habe ich Beat the Noise, Lightbringer, Get On, Dynamo Clock und Worlds collide gehört. Ich liebe Eskils Stimme, und bei Beat the Noise und Lightbringer kommt sie so richtig gut raus !Der Rest ist Beiwerk, insbesondere The Road braucht für meinen Geschmack zu lange, um zu wirken. Aber wo bitteschön gibt es Scheiben, wo nur gute Lieder drauf sind ? Außerdem ist es eh Geschmackssache.Also: Mut, um sich ruhig selber ein Bild zu machen - es lohnt sich !!

Ein großartiges Album, möglicherweise das beste, das Covenant je abgeliefert haben.Vorschnelle Kritiker sollten sich vielleicht mal etwas Zeit lassen, denn die Songs brauchen Zeit, bis man sich hineingehört hat.Kein Wunder, sind sie doch sehr vielschichtig und detailverliebt arrangiert. Böse Zungen könnten behaupten, Covenant sind heute das, was Depeche Mode früher einmal waren.Die Songs haben alles, was Covenant schon immer auszeichnet: eingängige, herzzerreißende Melodien, individuelle Sounds, kraftvolle Synthi-Arrangements ohne zu viel Techno-Gestampfe und natürlich der melancholische Gesang von Eskil Simonsson, der mich bisweilen etwas an Mic Jogwer von Pink Turns Blue erinnert. Aber diesmal wirken sie noch etwas kraftvoller, weniger traurig als z.B. noch bei "Happy man" oder "Brave new world" und auch eine Spur expeerimenteller, wie man z.B. an dem häufiger eingesetzten Maschinen-Rauschen erkennt.Zudem sind die Songs sehr vielfältig: "Lightbringer" ist ein schöner Synthi-Pop-Song, "The Beauty and the Grace" verbreitet authentisches Wave-Feeling, "Get on" ist ein Future-Pop-Song, der aber mit seiner Synthi-Improvisation fast an 70er-Artrock erinnert. "Worlds Collide" kommt ungewöhnt rhythmisch daher, "Dynamo Clock" und "Beat the noise" versprühen pure Energie, und mit "The night" ist ein Song auf dem Album, der mit seinen auf- und abgehenden Sounds und dem grotesk verzerrten Gesang gleichzeitig traurig und ulkig ist - wie ein Monster voller Sehnsucht.Schließlich gibt es als verkappten Bonus-Track noch zehn Minuten Computerrauschen. Geht das noch an, ist allerdings die Bonus-Cd einfach nur überflüssig. Hier ist das passiert, was auf dem Album zum Glück nicht passiert ist: Techno-Gestampfe mit blöden Samples. Vergessen wir sie am besten einfach.Insgesamt gibt es zur Zeit kaum eine Band, die das entwurzelte und orientierungslose Lebensgefühl der postmodernen Gesellschaft zehn Jahre nach dem Jahrtausendwechsel so gut herüberbringt.
