Offer very good value for money for a budget end bike or winter hack
Quick release skewers have been around a long time, invented in 1920 by Tullio Campagnolo, founder of the premium Italian Campagnolo company, to many minds the gold standard of cycle component manufacture. Skewers are still the standard for road bikes, although bikes with hydraulic disc brakes now feature the newer and more robust through axle arrangement due to the stresses caused by being able to stop on a sixpence. Whilst cheap bikes still use nuts requiring a box spanner to be carried skewers have been ubiquitous on higher specification bikes certainly since the 1980’s – easy to take a wheel out and fix a puncture in a fraction of the time it takes with a box spanner, and easier to position first time correctly too. Offered for review under the Amazon Vine programme, these Honiwu™ Quick Release Skewers are good for road bikes; and lower-end mountain bikes and gravel bikes featuring cable pull rather than hydraulic brakes. For anyone not familiar with this system what you get is a metal bar that fits through the centre of the wheel axle, in this case manufactured from iron and aluminium alloy – harder wearing stainless steel is a more pricy alternative, iron can rust in the British weather so I’d advise that you check periodically to remain safe – I’ve had a skewer break on my winter bike due to weather incursion and lack of checking which isn’t the most pleasant experience and a definite learning point. Regardless, you should get several years’ happy use out of these. The skewers are threaded at both ends that feature a serrated nut at one end and a skewer at the other. There’s additionally a spring at either end to ensure a positive fit that fits on the outside of each lug. You simply tighten the nut and when tight enough close the skewer to put the sort of pressure on the lugs that mean even inadvertently going down a large pothole isn’t going to see the wheel deserting the bike. You’ll get occasional beginners or in-a-rush positioning errors where over tightening the nut sees the wheel rim catching the brake block, but that’s a simple error to fix by simply loosening the skewer and nut and starting again.Iron can soon tarnish if riding through the worse of the winter weather and risks getting rusty. However at just £7.37 a pair that’s as cheap as chips and they can be treated as a consumable item – you wouldn’t want expensive components on a winter bike anyway given the damage road salt and grime can mete out. The serrated nut is plastic, the locking lever coated aluminium, which again points to the price point. The skewers aren’t the lightest at a stated 106 grams via the product information, but I’d rather have robustness than weight saving for my intended winter use. I think these offer very good value for money for a budget end bike or winter hack and particularly so if you have that grim cyclists’ determination to ride in all weathers regardless.

Seem To do The Job
Review Honiwu Quick Release Skewer Set, 1 Pair Wheel Hub Front & Rear Skewers, Ultralight Alloy Bike Quick Release Skewers for Road Mountain Bike MTBDoing a fair amount of cycling I love these quick release wheel, as they dont require any additional tools (important out on the road) and dont require hands getting unnecessarily dirty in the process of remove the when from the bike. The releases are asymmetrically sized as the rear needs to be longer to accommodate the gear change sprocket. On changing the wheel you can just as easily and securely lock it back in place using the integrated fold down lever. Overall these seem good for the price.
