It may be a bit heavy to travel with but it was definitely useful and we felt we got to see much of what Sydney and Melbourne has to offer.

The Book
What Footprint does with their South America guide, Lonely Planet does with Australia. There's no better book on Oz out there, period.

Provides a good overview
This brick-of-a-book could double as a doorstop, so it's not the guide you'll casually toss in your bag to carry around for the day. But then, it's covering an entire country, one that is large and with a lot to see. And it does a decent job of conveying information about that country. Using small type over nearly 1100 pages, it crams info on history, transportation, eats, wineries, nature, entertainment, lodging. . .if you are going to use only one guide book (something I don't recommend, ever) this one will give you a fine overview. I think they do an especially good job describing ways to get around. Contact info, including URLs, make it easy to find out more about whatever piques your curiosity. But there are some problems. The information could be better organized. Maps are often nowhere near the text for the area about which you are reading. Many maps and points of interest come after the text; it would be much better if they came before. There is one wimpy pull-out map of Sydney in the back. It could be more detailed and maps of other cities would also be welcome.

Lonely Planet Australia
Lonely Planet é una garanzia per quantitá e qualitá di informazioni per tutti i possibili stili di vacanza. Unica pecca di questo volume é appunto il volume (1000+ pagine, non troppo comodo on the road)

It has been 20 years since I had the last LP Australia and this edition is better than ever
I'm 45 now but got this as I had a 3 week trip to visit my brother in Sydney in January. It has been 20 years since I had the last LP Australia and this edition is better than ever. Lots of colourful photos, a brilliant Sydney map in the back which you can remove, excellent tips on places to visit, places to stay, bars and restaurants. I used mainly for Sydney plus mini trips to Melbourne and Byron Bay and it was in my bag and used every day! Highly recommend.

Informative
I'm going on a trip to Australia next year so I bought the book to start doing some initial planning. The book is very informative and gave me lots of ideas for things to see and do.
