Masterful narration by Kirt Graves
AnubisBook 2 in the Wolves Incarnate seriesAuthor Adrienne WilderNarrated by Kirt GravesPublication date Mar 28, 2023Running time 21 hrs 16 minAudio review:Hearing Kirk Graves's narration of Anubis was wonderful. Hearing Nox, Luca, and Dante again was like listening to an old friend after an absence. His distinct voices for NoX, Luca, Dr. Reese Dante, and Mrs. Laura Phillips are joined by new characters like Jonathan, Seung, and Isaiah. Kirt Grave's voice creates a masterful narration, the uncertainty, and fear of Dr. Dante, the power of the Anubis, the love between Luca and Nox, Isaiah's zealotry, and Jonathan's righteousness. It is a joy to lose myself in Adrienne Wilder's story brought to life by Kirt Graves.Book Review:For almost two years I sang the praises of Nox. In a year where I read or listened to 511 books in total, Nox easily outshone the others. I wanted more, as people tend to do when they love something. When that more arrived, it was glorious. Anubis is a worthy successor to Nox.The world-building in Anubis is complex and very good. It opens up a world that Nox only hinted at. The reader finds out what the Anubis truly is and how it fits in the world of the Varu.Adrienne Wilder is one of my favorite authors. His ideas are intriguing. The language and descriptions paint such detailed pictures in my mind. For example: "The wolf appeared from nothing beside Isaiah. The lack of light and night vision of the Anubis didn’t strip away its gold coloration. Stars glittered in its coat, and nebulas filled its blue eyes." That description stopped me in my tracks the first time I read it. Wolves are beautiful animals but imagine one made of stars with swirling nebulas in its eyes. It is beyond beautiful.Characters that I loved from Nox had significant growth and depth in Anubis. Luca and Nox are still my all-time favorite couple. The concept of loving someone so much you are willing to die to protect them is something I think everyone yearns for. Dr. Reese Dante is in the center of the action this time. His motivation is simple: “I’m not brave. I’m paying penance. There’s a difference.” He is also one of my favorite characters because he is such a good man. Watching him grow into a fuller character was wonderful. The action is well written. It is easy to follow. I could easily discern what was happening to who. The big battle scene is exciting and helps push the story forward. It is not just fighting for fighting's sake.Adrienne Wilder has promised there is more to come. I am ready to preorder the next book as soon as it is available. Go on a journey with Luca, Nox, and Dr. Dante. Explore this world. New friends and foes, not necessarily signaling who is what at first, are waiting.I received an advance review copy from Tantor Media. I listened to Anubis and wrote an honest review. I also bought a copy through Audible.

Conversation information dumps
Right.NoX was awesome. Truly fabulous. So I jumped into Anubis and expected more of the same. And to a point, this second book was awesome too. And I highly recommend this series. But, I've got to say, that the story has gotten so intricate and complex it's borderline annoying. It's great that nothing's black or white. The bad guys turn out to be maybe not as bad as one originally thought, former adversaries work together when their goals align etc. And all of these things add to the story, making it fuller and more interesting. But in the case of Anubis, the plot has gotten so convoluted, and has so many different players, that an enormous amount of storytime is spent on different people explaining the plot to each other. Instead of the story unfolding organically, through a combination of events and conversations between characters, from about halfway into Anubis, the explaining takes over entirely. Different people, in different constellations, just keep talking and talking, explaining to each other various aspects of the plot. And in my opinion, that only happens when the author has bitten off more than they can chew. It's unfortunate. Because it's a fantastic tale, and riveting in many ways. But the story has obviously become too complicated, and Wilder tries to manage it by huge information dumps disguised as conversations. It's disappointing. But still. 5 stars. And I'm eagerly awaiting the third book whenever that will be.

Loved
Totally loved NOX but MS Wilder it took more than 3 years for ANUBIS it's a lifetime of wait to read the next book in this series. I forgot so much of the previous story It felt like I was reading a standalone .I remember the intensity, excitement of of reading NOX for about a year but many books and years later it was a hum reading ANUBIS. Imagine waiting until 2025 to read the next book in this series. I will purchase ANUBIS because it was awesome, wait 3 years and read all three books hopefully there is only 3 books because I'm aging and a 3 year gap is killing me 😅😂😅🎉🎊

Wow! Fantastic!
I read book 1 and 2 in a few short days, they were hard to put down. This is by far the most unique shifter books I have ever read and I read a lot of them so that’s saying something! The knowledge and intelligence the author must have to be able to write these is just astounding! I had to reread some sentences and look up words just to comprehend what I was reading sometimes lol but that’s not a bad thing. It made me think and learn!I love that there are several different character POVs even side characters and characters who aren’t necessarily the good guys. But most of the characters live in this grey area and that makes it so much more enjoyable because it isn’t so black and white. It’s very realistic that way. Also the romance and steam is amazing. I really want 2 side characters to get together in the next book though, so here’s to hoping!

what.the.hell
I want the next book, now. I sure hope AW is quicker with the next book than it took to get from book 1 to 2. I should have reread the first one before I started this one. It took me awhile to remember stuff that happened in book 1, so the story started off a little slow for me. There is a lot of info and terminologies to wade through. Full of action, with different threads that are just as interesting as the other. Luca and Nox are the heart of the story, but I really liked Dr Dante and Jonathan’s as well. There are some strong kick-ass women, Seung and Phillips. Really intrigued and impatient to find out what happens next. I hope we hear more about Crispin, too. Isaiah is frustrating. His heart’s in the right place, but he’s close-minded and needs to trust his instincts more. Even his fenrir thinks so if actions speak louder than words. These books are not stand-alone, and unlike me, if you haven’t started this one yet, I’d recommend reading book one first so that everything is fresh in your mind. The events of this book happen about a month after book one.

Very nice world building and development
This part is definitely more immersive and intricate than the first book. It gets more global and the plot touches many characters.I liked that for the most part the author didn't fall into these are bad guys and these are good guys trap. There are multiple sides, that have their own motivations and loyalties. So yeah, most 'evil doers' are not doing that because they are 'evil' or because they fall into the society illustration of bad behavior (meaning you don't get some empty misogynistic, racist, homophobic bad guy trope). So yeah, very impressed with the author making things more complicated in a more real way (at least to me). What I could have done without though: multiple chapter POV. I don't mind 2-4 but here we got way more and some weren't recurring so I'd rather follow POVs that pop up at least twice. As for the couples, we get another way here, kind of lol, and in my opinion they took the top spot. The amount of tension was insane so I was really curious where it would go. One of the characters though was being too radical when trying to deal with their connection and that intensity didn't really make sense to me.Anyway, I'd say this book is about 4.5 - it had it ups and downs but I'm scoring it higher because 1) it made me look forward to the next book, 2) the universe wasn't something I've ever read about before 3) the story keeps getting better and better so I have high hopes.
