Wonderful book about being different
Velvet is odd. All the kids think so. But Velvet doesn't mind that they think that, and she goes on her way, just being herself, and the kids come to learn that different is pretty great after all.I love this book so much. I discovered it years ago, at a little bookstore and brought it home with me, because it resonated as something true and wonderful. I've subsequently given that copy, and many other copies away to kids who follow their own paths. In fact, I bought this copy to replace my copy, which I gave to a girl in my son's class who reminds me very much of Velvet. You know those books that you read, and then you want to hug and hold in your heart forever? This is one of those books. Appropriate for all ages. The art is vivid and bright and happy. The text is short and easy enough for beginning readers, but deep enough for adults. I love this book, and I think every kid (and grownup) who has ever felt like they see the world a little differently will be happy to have this in their collection.

Not what I expected I guess
I loved the idea for the book, but was disappointed when it arrived. I felt like it singled Velvet out as being "odd" not just because she saw the world differently, but because she was "poor" - she wore hand me down clothes, lived in the outskirts and only had simple toys. I wanted to like this book more than I did, but I didn't find Velvet actually "odd" or the story interesting, and after reading it once to my 5yo daughter, she's never asked for it again and I've never offered it up.

Good story and teaching resource.
Love this story. It is great resource for teachers to teach characters and their traits, for both directly stated and indirectly stated traits.

If you've ever felt "odd" then this is the book for you.
In a subtle, non-didactic way, this book addresses bullying and relational aggression (mean girl bullying). Velvet is "odd" by most kid's standards, but by book's end, the other children learn what makes her "special" instead of "odd." I give this book to every little girl I know. It teaches readers not to judge someone until you get to know them, and that everyone has something special to offer. Most importantly it teaches readers that "odd" is okay; to be proud of exactly who you are.

We're all a little like Velvet
When I first pre-read this book, I felt a little teary eyed for Velvet, but then I realized how strong a little girl she is. I read it to a small group of children. It sends a great message - take pride in who you are. It shows children that all of us have some oddities that make us the individuals we are. It also teaches us that others will love us for our little quirks. This book is great for inclusion classes, for children on the autism spectrum, and for multi ethnic groups (where some practices may be seen as strange or funny).
