Q: My owl only hoots when I first turn it on. The light won’t shut off and it won’t activate with motion. I walked past several times and it doesn’t hoot

Check the setting because you can have it with or without the noise. Also, I recommend taking the batteries out and even install new ones, better quality. Good luck

Q: How high up can this be hung and still work on squirrels, rabbits, large dogs, etc.?

I don’t hang mine up. It comes with a stand, like a picture frame. Mine is at the front door. The owls eyes light up and hoots. Not just good to scare off critters but let’s you know someone is at the door.

Welcome to my world. They send out junk that doesn't work. My first one worked and my daughter-in-law loved it so I bought one for her birthday which was a month away, and another for myself. When she opened hers, it didn't work. And my second one didn't work. Out of my 30 day return, I contacted the company directly explaining it was a bday gift which is why I didn't return within the 30 day policy and they refused to do anything about it. I did get a new one for the second one I ordered for myself. It worked for about a month and then quit. And my original one has now also quit. So, I've had 4 and none of them work at all now. And this company does not stand behind their product.

Q: Does it keep the deer away?

I don't know - it doesn't seem like something I would keep out doors.
