Too many cooks spoil the broth...
It would be grossly unfair to criticise the author, Anna Selby, for including such a plethora of recipes into her book because this is exactly what she intended. If anyone is reading this ‘review’ though, please understand that “A Victorian Christmas” is primarily “A Victorian Christmas Cookbook” and this needs to be taken into account should you chose to purchase this book.In between the copious recipes are some interesting articles about the festive season, including Saint Days, Pagan and Christian traditions, Dickensian tales and anecdotes from past times. Tales such as: all the old ladies from the village getting drunk on St Thomas’ Day (21st December), or the Pagans “Wassailling” :- so, come to think of it, the author likes writing about booze too...

Recipes galore
Very interesting but a few too many recipes for my liking. If you want lots of old recipes to refer to, then this is the book for you.

An easy read for Christmas
A fascinating account of food, games and family life with the Victorians at Christmas, with glances back at earlier centuries. An easy read to dip into over the Christmas season.

The Victorians have a lot to asnwer for
The Victorians have a lot to answer for! It was good for the rich to indulge themselves but if you were born on the wrong side of the track it was a totally different matter - you did without!

Lovely book
Fascinating account of the traditions of Christmas from the Victorian era and to compare them with those of today. Lovely book to give as a gift for Christmas.
