Gumbo Shop : A New Orleans Restaurant Cookbook

Gumbo Shop is our favorite restaurant in New Orleans, and the cookbook has the recipes for our favorite dishes

While the actual construction of the book could be better, the recipes are all outstanding and they all work well and make delicious dishes. The recipes may be a bit time consuming, but they are not difficult and the results are wonderful.

I absolutely LOVE this cookbook. I bought this as a replacement for the original cookbook that I purchased from The Gumbo Shoppe years ago. Every recipe works and tastes just like what you order in the restaurant. My only criticism would be with the binding. This is a book that I use very frequently. Within a few times of opening, the pages start to loosen from the binding until they eventually fallout. They did not make any improvements on the binding since my first copy of the book came out. It still doesn’t change the fact that this is one of my favorite cookbooks to use.

I love NOLA! The Gumbo Shop is our favorite restaurant. The shrimp points are my fav! I purchased this as a gift for my MIL. I have used her cookbook so many times to make the creole recipe that I finally bought my own. I cannot wait to get back to NOLA & The Gumbo Shop after the COVID restrictions are lifted!

Back in the day we either bought record albums or 45's. Most albums had two or sometimes three good songs on them. Often cook books are similar. Not this one. Granted a few of the receipts need slight changes to suit your taste. But many of them are great.

We ate there three times during our last trip to NO and bought the book and the Gumbo Shop Seasonings. Loved it! The recipes are easy to follow and very forgiving. You can add ingredients by eye without a measuring cup. Great tutorial in the front of the book about cooking techniques, seasonings and NO food history. My wife and I are Gumbo lovers so this book is a valuable addition to our library.

I had the opportunity to visit the amazing Gumbo Shop in New Orleans a couple of months ago. I fell in love with New Orleans and the Creole/Cajun way of cooking. I bought this cookbook, and I have to say the gumbo I make from them is AMAZING! It's restaurant-quality for sure. The recipes are easy to make. You might think it would be impossible to find turtle meat or blue crabs where you live but you can find these items with a little ingenuity. It's well worth the effort. In a pinch, I have taken a few shortcuts (like using store-bought chicken or fish stock instead of making my own), and the results are still spectacular. I highly recommend this book!

I was motivated to write this review when I read another review from a person in Alexandria, VA, who said the recipes and the restaurant was for tourists and that a native from Louisiana would never use it. I was born and raised in Louisiana and my mother was raised in New Orleans. I have tested almost every recipe in this book and 90% of them are, in my opinion, fabulous. This is how my grandmother's dishes tasted when I was a little girl. It's the real thing, not gourmet, but how many "normal" people are gourmet cooks? After family and friends sample a recipe, they either ask how they can get the cookbook or ask for the recipe. I've purchased around 10 as gifts. In fact, that's why I was on the site today... buying another copy!
